Now, this really sucks. Big Ten teams will play conference only. The Ivy League is not playing and Stanford cancelled a number of their varsity sports. So it is just not the Nerd schools.It will be interesting to see what happens with the SEC.

Got a question for ya. In another thread out here we're having dialog/debate over whether public school teachers should be paid during the shutdown. To that end, should scholarship athletes for sports that have been cancelled, lose their scholarships if they aren't going to be playing?

No. Those guys work their asses off. The schools are going to lose some big time money as football pays for almost all other sports except basketball. At my alma mater a lot of the athletic money went into scholarships for poor kids. The rest of it goes for interhall athletics.

I saw something about the ACC schools doing the same. I think this will be reflective throughout the system. In light of this it begs to ask the question “what will happen to independent schools like BYU” (Notre Dame has a limited agreement with the ACC so I think they’re placated).

Good question. Navy is independent as well and hopefully will still play their season opener in Baltimore. I sure hope this opportunity does not force independents into joining a conference. There is just so much tradition in college ball.

As much as I hate to see this happening it might be a good thing. Playing teams in their own conference will stop them from playing "rent-a- win" teams and then their win/loss record would be more real world . Some of the lesser teams play the big boys due to the money incentive and if for some chance they should win then they get bragging rights for the win. Some of the smaller schools play several larger schools each year in different sports and are very happy when they go to the bank to deposit their payday . Some of these schools use the monies to support their athletic programs in several sports. ..........................drill sgt.

I feel for you. I have two daughters that played college tennis. Even with Title IX, the girls tend to get short shrift.

We are anxiously awaiting also. The youngest has a high jump scholarship, had her whole senior year of track wiped out this past spring and also made the cheer team and the middle one has a football scholarship, sophomore year, now they are talking spring ball. It’s heart breaking to have seen these kids work so hard and possibly have it wiped out this year. Both are at small schools here in state. Education to their mom and I is for most, but dammit, they both sacrificed a lot to go the extra mile. The oldest was a college senior this year and had a basketball ride, she was able to play before all this hit the fan, but had no college graduation ceremony because of this. It’s truly heartbreaking for the kids. Their mom and I know it’s all bullshit but it really hurts not possibly getting to see your kids compete in something they worked so hard for.

When the NFL took a dump, I switched to College Football as the only sport to watch - that worked for a couple years but honestly, I could give a fuck now if they ever come back. They are the Jr thug life league, destined to follow in the NFLs footsteps. Bowls are a joke, so are 2/3s of the games. Now I don't care if it ever comes back.

Does this include the Naval Academy? Not all the college programs fit the JR. Thug category. There certainly the Win at all costs schools and those that could care less if the players go to class or graduate.

Yes, it does.

Didn't like being forced to attend crappy Navy Football home games for 4 years and I can count on one hand how many games I've watched in the past 20+ years since graduation.

While the players there are likely on average a 'cut above' the average College FB player, the amount of slack they were cut in terms of grades, performance, etc was mind blowing compared to everyone else. They definitely had it easy when it came to academics / performance.

Ok thanks. I understand that the players now can directly enter the NFL draft. The academy did produce Roger Staubach and Joe Bellino.

I say no. It doesn't cost the school out of pocket, and if the games are cancelled the athletes could actually attend classes and maybe get some value out of their scholarships.

All I am asking for is one college football game per week and maybe some NHL hockey once in a while. I enjoy high brow stuff too, but come on. The average American could care less about the world. Eliminating sports is going to do nothing to raise American awareness. It is not like the average American is going to join The Book of the Month club.
