Get my pies outta the oven! |
I have been making a sweet potato pie the past few Thanksgivings that has been received very well and I think people like it over pumpkin pie. I'm making that again and an apple pie with local apples from an orchard right nearby, maybe with 3 different types of apples. What are your favorite pies for Turkey Day?

Either Buttermilk or Pecan Pie, this year is the latter. "I’m not going to read Time Magazine, I’m not going to read Newsweek, I’m not going to read any of these magazines; I mean, because they have too much to lose by printing the truth"- Bob Dylan, 1965

Break out, and give this Burnt Almond Torte a go. It's a copy of the one from Prantl's in Pittsburgh- I had one of those gifted to me a couple years ago and it was AWESOME!!! This is a little involved for time, but honestly really easy to make and assemble. It's like nothing most folks have had and will be a hit of the show. Just made it again last weekend for wife's b'day. Only tweak to their recipe is 3/4 c buttermilk in batter instead of 1/2. Burnt Almond Torte If you're looking for a perfect coconut cream pie recipe, go here. Or for all the flavor but the current trend of a lush, go here, Full disclosure, I know the folks behind that blog and they put a lot into their research. The story about the pie and crust is true; she spent weeks on it. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

Coconut Cream is my favorite pie although I don't consider it a holiday pie. I love Blueberry and Strawberry Rhubarb pies and I eat them all year round when I can. Look forward to Sweet Potato and Pecan Pie specifically at holiday time.

Pecan is the gold standard in our home, but I will admit I am very fond of an apple pie, something that Mrs. A. does not include in her repertoire. Wanting not to be a downer I will refrain from elucidating my stance on pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie.

Huge fan of Libby's pumpkin cheesecake. I make it every year. However, we'll be in Ambergris Caye, Belize this year, so no pumpkin cheesecake for me! Libby's Pumpkin Cheesecake

My grandmother created both a chocolate pie and peanut butter pie recipe as a teen during the Depression. Those 2 pies were a holiday staple and I'm a big fan of peanut butter. One of the cool things Mom did when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer was to handwrite a family favorite recipe book for me. It contains paternal and maternal grandmother recipes along with Mom's recipes. Grandma's peanut butter pie is in there and I make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. That's kind of an odd thing to say Have you never eaten a good pumpkin pie? I know there are a lot of bad ones out there. Any commercial/store bought pumpkin pie I've ever eaten was not good, just heavy and too much spice and not creamy/custardy. The classic recipe off the Libby's can made with evaporated milk is still the best one to me.
