It's mainly due to incorrect (larger) clearances. Bearing clearances are the major factor in determining oil viscosity for proper fluid bearing dynamics. So, it is an "oil based" failure operating with incorrect oil. Establishing the proper oil for these affected engines is not a band-aid, it is the correction. Certainly the root cause is the larger clearances and the lack of realizing this, leading to operating them with the incorrect oil viscosity. If it were simply "bad surfacing/contamination", the recall would require oil analyses and/or visual inspection of connecting rod bearing(s). Not changing the oil and hoping for the best, considering as many vehicles affected, GM would want to get in from of this.
