Obama: “So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them, because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted,”

“Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket"

“Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to, uh, retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.”

In Ferguson, the national guard was called up after days of rioting. They encamped and protected city hall while private businesses were burned. It's becoming clear that as society breaks down the police will protect the political class they report to.... they know who signs their paycheck. The public, who pay the taxes that support them, will be left to fend for themselves.

The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I wouldn't say that it's the fault of the police or National Guard - they are under orders to protect the 'political elite.' They aren't doing it because they like or support the pols.

If they refuse orders or rock the boat, they will be fired, and then they and their families will lose their source of income. I don't really blame them. It's easy, from behind a keyboard hundreds or thousands of miles away, to say they should just quit out of protest. However, for them, it's a much more personal decision.

If you have a problem with how it was handled in Ferguson and in Berkely, they place blame where it belongs - with the self-serving dirtbag politicians that place THEIR own safety and needs above those of the people whom they are sworn to serve. . .

I don't disagree with you.
I complained about the Governor (Nixon) who called them up and held them back. I helped our new Governor (Greitens) get elected.

You wouldn't believe the howling that would ensue if the budget had to be trimmed for handouts so city and county facilities could be rebuilt.

Besides, CVS has insurance!

If the po-po suppressed rioters, the rioters wouldn't vote for the officials who ordered the crackdown.

The First Amendment, I need not remind you, provides for "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

I think you are doing a disservice to the front-line officers who were out there doing their job, including several here at SIGforum. The police leadership, however, you may be right about.

The last time the public was aware that we were this close to man-made global warming was in 1962. At that time we were dealing with an arch enemy but the arch enemy wasn't a certifiable rubber-room escapee with a messiah complex not to mention a really bad haircut.

I think this time is more frightening and I am a little surprised that there is less emotion from the guys and girls at the coffee shop.

You don't know that. Furthermore, I don't think we are "close" to anything. It seems like a lot of people are just certain that NK has deployable, deliverable nuclear weapons.

I wish people would stop comparing this to BOP/Cuban Missile Crisis. Russia actually had deliverable nuclear weapons, 90 miles from the United States. This is not that.

In '62 the missiles were 90 miles from the US. The USSR had already proven they had miniaturized the devices and had a vehicle to deliver them.

For all we know, Un's devices are the size of a locomotive and he does not have the vehicle to deliver the devices to US soil.

Right now it is a regional threat in someone else's region.

I have heard speculation that the size of the previous tests were such that there may be no devices. I have read somewhere that the underground tests could have been conventional explosives (many, many tons worth) to give the appearance of working devices. I am not saying I believe that, but I don't know that I have read that we definitively know that they were all nukes (really have not done much searching on the net to see if our intelligence agencies have proven they were all nukes or not).

Anyway, that may be the reason some are not getting to fired-up about this.

The punk needs a good, debilitating punch in the nose if not whacked altogether. I remember his kind in grade school, high school, and college. They all got their asses handed to them at some point. I believe he will too.

USA has about 29% of the worlds coal.
8.26001E+11 tons.

I recall an article from a couple years ago that indicated that we had enough coal to last some 1100 years. Don't remember where I read it, but it was being bandied about in the media.
