It ain't walleye, but given that it's the fish that they caught in the Sea of Galilee, I suppose it'd do. And the beer is a bonus!

I had a neighbor, sadly he died last year, who used to raise tilapia in a pool he set up in his greenhouse. They were fantastic.

Between my boat and a buddy of mine we caught over 450 walleye last year and still have plenty in the freezer.
Season will be starting again for me at the end of March.
I love eating walleye and it's the finest fish to eat but I don't buy it in a diner.
Catch it, cook it, eat it!

Are you finding they are getting huge in Erie? In the eastern end of Lake Ontario where I fish they are getting huge on gobies (so are the smallies). There was one taken through the ice a few weeks ago that was just shy of the state record.

I screwed up. I believe it was Talapia at one time. Now it is Cod. The guys that fry it up at the church do a bang up job.

We used to go on weekend excursion to northern Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Like Rainie lake, the northern most lake in Minnesota near International falls usually the coldest place in the lower 40. We caught and release countless Walleye, and kept a few for dinner. Now I wonder who much money we let swim away. No matter, I'm not a tree hugger, but when I can, I do my part and usually feel pretty good about it.

I haven’t had a chance to go yet, but following HRK’s tip I looked at the prices for my local store using the order online: $19.49 b4 tax for the 3-piece meal. It was $14 and change last year which was a couple bucks more than the previous year. I’m sorry, I had no idea the price went up that much.

Our introduction to fresh walleye and perch was during Camp Perry Smallbore, at Jolly Roger's:

My wife and I had the Walleye Sandwich and found it to be very greasy and no way compared to what they offered years ago during lent. It was smaller than the past Walleye sandwiches as well. Sorry Culvers - Nice Try.

My wife and I tried to go to the nearby Culver's last evening. I don't know whether it was the Lent thing, because so many people were without power following the ice storm, or both, but, the parking lot was packed and the drive-through was all the way around the building and almost out into the road.

We turned around and left.

I was really looking forward to that walleye Frown Maybe this coming week, in the middle of the week.

I tried as well, but they were packed here as well. No ice storm. In fact, I bumped onto a couple I know who were leaving and they said Culver’s was out of ice and most sodas, so I turned around.

Growing up as a Catholic in the south, our parish fish frys during Lent were usually catfish.
There is a Culvers in Mobile.
Ill have to try the walleye.

I gave Culver's a try last night. The verdict:
  • hapless staff could barely take an order. I know exactly what I want and it still took minutes to order. The idiots in front of me thought ordering was akin to splitting the atom so it took over 5 minutes for them to order. I think the kid taking orders has a bright future at the TSA.
  • hapless staff couldn't be bothered to deliver my order to the table. They're standing around and I saw what I guessed was my walleye sitting there dying in the window. I went back to the counter and it still took a couple minutes to retrieve from window and put it on a tray with everything else.
  • the walleye dinner was good not great. The actual walleye was light, flaky, moist, and tasty. The batter was thicker than my liking, fell off the fish, and had an old fryer oil taste. They also don't appear to attempt to let the fryer oil drip off the fish by letting it hang in basket over the fryer for a minute or two.
  • 3-piece dinner was $23.90 with drink and tax
  • I drove past dozens and dozens of better restaurants to make the 20 mile drive and won't be repeating.

Had them on Friday, I killed the 3 piece with fries, coleslaw and bread. Sweet tea was the drink. Not bad but a tad greasy. I suspect they fry it and don't have a proper try to put the fish on.

First time having walleye, it was definitely good. Airy and fluffy with a nice flavor that doesn't overpower your taste buds. Would I get it again? Maybe but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Must be lucky here in the Black Hills. Our two Culvers are primarily staffed with middle aged and senior folks. When I got my walleye dinner the other day it was not only brought to my table where I sat waiting while it was prepared but the lady carried it out to my car. I walk with a cane and the purchase required two hands.

This service is normal here. And oh yeah, the fish was properly breaded and fried... no greasy issues, etc. Just well prepared and served food. And didn't have to ask about a senior or military discount. I was told it was applied as I ordered. Big Grin

A friend and I went to the local Culvers to have the walleye. She got the sandwich and I ordered a 2 piece dinner. Her meal was okay according to her, mine pretty much sucked. Very greasy and there was skin left on the first filet which I scraped off as its' taste is not a favorite of mine. The second filet was full of bones. I don't do bones in fish as when young I had to go to hospital to have one removed from my throat. All in all not a good meal for me, I will not be going back for another. At least the Cole slaw was decent.

Looks like the quality varies a lot between different Culver's locations. The corporate quality control program isn't up to Chick-Fil-A standards.
