One of the things I truly miss from growing up in Wisconsin is the all you can eat Friday Night Fish Fry at the local bowling alley. I’ve really been disappointed with fried fish since to the point where I just quit ordering it, but I gave the walleye at Culver’s a shot a few years ago when they opened a restaurant near me in Florida. Now it’s not all you can eat, nor is it $5, but the first bite took my back to the bowling alley when I was 10 and thinking "That’s it! That’s what fried fish is supposed to be.”

Could be the bowling alley had the worst fried fish ever and it ruined my taste buds for life, so if you try the Culver’s walleye and don’t like it, I apologize in advance.

In my opinion there is no better tasting fresh water fish than the walleye.

This reminds me of one of the biggest local scandals to hit the upper Midwest some years ago.

Restaurants were advertising Walleye, but were actually serving Zander.

To born-and-bred Minnesotans, this was liken to putting a Made in the USA label on something made in Canada.

Something’s A Bit Fishy At Many of Our Restaurants

Gander shows that walleye is zander

Grew up in the Upper Midwest and I love walleye. I’ll have to give Culver’s a shot as I do miss it.

My maternal grandfather was nuts about it. He always picked his favorite fried walleye spot for birthday and Father’s Day.

I lived in Minnesota for 30 years. I considered walleye to be the fresh water equivalent of halibut.

Here in San Diego I know of only one restaurant that offers walleye: Red Tracton's. But a big disappointment – it had been frozen. Not even close.

Saw that the other day and was thinking of giving it a try.
Is it going to only be for Lent or or they going to make it a permanent menu item?

When you mentioned the all you can eat Friday fish fry at your bowling ally, it reminded me of one of my customers years ago back in New Jersey.
I had a Elks lodge that did the same thing and at the time for them it was huge. They did it all year long.
I always talked about going but never did.

Just went to their web site.
The menu says availability for a limited time only.

I guess I will have to go this week to try it.

Being from Minnesota Walleye capitol of the world and have had literally eaten hundreds of pounds of Walleye I challenge you to find a better eating fish than than a jumbo perch caught through the ice from Devil's Lake North Dakota.

Years ago Culver’s walleye left me wanting - and it never returned. Just told my wife - Guess where were going for dinner Friday. It was a big sandwich.

Indeed - I grew up in Wisconsin as well and we used to hit the local bar for the 'all you can eat' perch and fries dinner. It was $1 for a paper plate full of the goodness as I recall. I loved perch.

We have a local restaurant called "Bub's Grub" here whose ownership is Wisconsin based. They have a friday night fish fry. I asked the server if it was Wisconsin perch - Nope, way, way too expensive. Oh well.

Haddock fish frys were common in upstate NY in my youth.

From what relatives have told me there is a place in Manlius still serving great haddock.

And yes Walleye is quite tasty and available here in South Dakota as it is our State's official fish. Hoping to sample Culver's Lent offering soon.

We have them in the reservoir locally (otherwise, I too have to drive over the mountains) and a couple years back I decided to learn how to catch them. I went out that first day and jigged them at about 30-40 feet and caught six nice ones in an hour or two. I thought, "Hell, this is easy!" I haven't caught six more since. I can't figure the damn things out. Mad

Seems to be available every year during Lent, so 40 days? Probably over by Easter, but while supplies last as they say and they have run out in the past.

I get the dinner, not the sandwich.

My wife just came back from the local Culver's, bearing a tray of take-out. It disappeared quickly.
