Left the house at 04:00 this morning. Roads were getting bad. Got to work at around 04:45. Roads we bad bad by then. Busy day, but nobody hurt bad in wrecks in my division.

Doing it again tomorrow...roads will probably be worse at the start.

I just went and shoveled out the walkway, and my metal carport is looking like it’s going to collapse. The gussets on the corners are buckled and it’s got a visible lean to the side. I moved the car out from underneath but I can’t move the boat.

Power is still out here in Travelers Rest. Been out since 4:30 this morning. Hopefully it’s back on soon.

We did venture out in my 4x4. Clearly the trees weren’t ready for this. They’re all over the roads.

Too much to shovel, I know that much. 10" and still snowing, I reckon. I wish I had a snow blower. I wonder if a 10 HP walk behind industrial leaf blower will work?

The snow we have here is too wet/heavy for that. There's a thin layer of slush underneath, too.

Been shoveling 15+ inches off of our walkway. Next up will be getting the snow off of our vehicles tomorrow.

Work has already been cancelled for Monday.

Measured 12 inches this morning and 16 this afternoon with drifts a lot higher! Southwest Virginia here.

We got over 3 inches of sleet and freezing rain. Not the most fun we did make the best out of it and do some sledding.

The weather channel seems to have completely forgot about us here in southern WV.

Yep! In Roanoke, VA they officially received 14.3" of the white stuff.

I plowed the driveways in my cul de sac yesterday about noon and will be going out in a bit to do it again. Fortunately, most of my neighbors are retired and don't have to go anywhere first thing.

The new snow blade I bought for my skid steer from a company in Minnesota worked like a charm!

Let me start by saying that like many others, I am thankful Global Warming kept this from being a more serious event. Had 10.5" at my house and power was out for 4 hours. Starting to snow again now.

14.5" here in Winston-Salem, yesterday left at 5:30am to make it to work (Emergency Room = essential, no excuses) by 7am. Arrived 15 minutes early. My relief was over an hour late. Have to go back for an overnight shift tonight, which should be even worse. We're still getting pretty heavy sleet and freezing rain now...

We only got about 2" accumulation saturday night/sunday morning. Rain throughout the day on Sunday washed a good portion of it away. All of us Construction Managers went into to work this morning as the roads were just fine but none of the contractors are working today. So we stayed for a couple of hours and went home.

Another 3 inches of snow overnight. 18 total.

When water in oceans, lakes, rivers, etc., gets warmer, more of it evaporates. When more evaporates and enters the atmosphere, then there is more water available to later condense out as rain or … yes, even snow when conditions are right. One of the reasons Antarctica is (or perhaps now was) considered a desert is because of the small amount of snow it receives, and why? Because it’s so cold there.

One of the earliest and sustained predictions about the effects of rising global temperatures was/is that weather patterns would change, to include more precipitation in some—but not all—areas. Where I live snowfall in recent years has generally been less than what was described in historical accounts. There may be room for debate about what is causing rising temperatures, but there is no doubt that they are, and there is no doubt that rising temperatures will have effects on the climate, including causing more severe storms and heavier precipitation in some areas. If you’re getting more snow occasionally now, don’t be surprised if you get more snow more frequently in the future.

I'm heading to Tucson Wednesday from Philadelphia and plan to take I81 to I40W to Memphis can anyone comment on the status of I81 and I40. I really don't want to take the PA Turnpike out to I70 and I70 out to ST Louis but I don't want to get stuck on snow covered roads either. I would think I40 should be pretty clear by Wednesday but it would help to know road conditions from those who live or travel through the area.

I do not claim to be a climate scientist, but I did have an army of geotechnical PhDs working for me on an oil & gas project in Alaska. The main 3 (out of 40+) had more than 120 years combined experience in geotechnical work in the Arctic Circle, were speakers at numerous national and international conferences, and published countless peer reviewed papers.

One of the more memorable conversations was them going over all of the Alaska stations where both snowfall and ground temperature was measured. The increases in snowfall corresponded with ground temps going up. This jived with my experience in building ice roads in the arctic circle since snow is an excellent insulator, and we had to hit roughly 23F at 2 feet deep (permits in metric for some odd reason) before we were allowed to start dumping water on the ground to build an ice road. We actually drove snowcats and other low ground pressure vehicles over the snow (called pre-packing) to mitigate snow's insulating effect and decrease the amt of time it took to hit permit temps.

We were discussing the above because it was making the news and people were calling decreased ground temps proof of global warming, but were ignoring the increase in snowfall insulating the ground from air temps. They also tend to leave off important details on whether they're discussing air temp and ground temp. In other words, latching onto one fact while ignoring or not considering others causes one to make less than rigorous conclusions and leaving off key details shows the bias surrounding the issue.

In your case, less snow will mean lower recorded ground temperatures.

18" is nothing. I lived for a winter, in the mountains in Cali, where it snowed 60" in one night. Typical storms bring 2-3 feet each time. In a canyon near where I lived, the snowfall for the season would be about 80 feet.
