Today is Orthodox Easter. in my case Greek Easter. Why the different dates? What’s the Difference Between Easter and Orthodox Easter? The holidays both celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, but have some different traditions and are based on different calendars. https://www.history.com/news/e...x-easter-differences

I started to read the article but got hung up on this: Three days later is Monday. I’m not going to hold History Channel to any sort of theological accuracy but that commonly held doctrine always confused me.

Mark, the thing is you believe in Christ. Maybe he was crucified late on that Friday & counted as a whole day? I’m a fallen away Catholic and I’d attend your Church no questions asked. Hope I’m not too simplistic in my reply. Ps. Happy Easter!

There is no day zero. The day Christ was crucified was day one. Saturday, day two. Sunday, the third day. If Saturday was day one…what was Friday, day zero? No such thing for the Hebrews. There’s still no way to account for 3 days and 3 nights.
Side note: I know gustofer doesn’t appreciate questions in catholic threads. If anyone here would rather I didn’t, I won’t. I, however, believe if your position is untenable then you should question it. On the other had, if you can defend it, you should.

Thank you for the reminder. My brother and sister in law are Greek Orthodox, and he just lost his mother last week. It'll be great to reach out to him today. ![]()

I've read a number of Bible commentators and scholars many years ago who answered the same question for me. The Hebrews counted any part of a day or a month or a year as a complete day, month or year. So a few hours in a day equals a day. Bob

It's not accurate to say "three days later" Jesus rose from the dead. It is instead, "on the third day" Jesus rose from the dead. The third day is Sunday. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

Jesus rose on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, but Jesus isn't trying to give a detailed timeframe in Matthew 12:38-42. He quotes Jonah 1:17 and makes a statement about how the men of Nineveh repented from their wickedness when Jonah warned them, but how the Scribes and Pharisees would not repent when they were given signs and were eventually confronted personally by Jesus. The parable in Matthew 21:33 also comes to mind here.

All good boys. growing up in an Italian, Irish Jewish area, me being Greek, was clearly the odd man out. perhaps the calendar explanation was "History Channel' close but not 100%. I wanted to explain the orthodox calendar. And of course, Happy Easter. Ouzo for everyone!

Comment from the Jewish guy -- I don't know where I got this translation, but I was always under the impression that it said "On the third day." So, if Friday is the fist day, then Sunday would be the third day. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

You might be thinking of John 2:19 or 1 Cor 15:4. I believe Paul is drawing from Hosea 6 in 1 Cor 15:4 when he says "according to the scriptures" since they had the LXX.
