Based on the experiences related by a couple of my friends over morning coffee, I'd absolutely purchase an extended warranty. Those vehicles are so technologically advanced there's a lot to go wrong on them, and none of it cheap to fix.

Leather is so much easier to keep clean than cloth. Even with seat covers for the car seats it is amazing what finds its way underneath.
A little wipe down with Lexol cleaner then conditioner you are golden.
With textured fabric Ford likes to uses it is a nightmare to clean. Plus milk and crap soaks in and getting the smell out sucks.

Even getting cloth and then buying real custom fit covers is the same price in the end.

I want no gizmos or options other than 4WD, backup camera, leather, and heated seats.
Anything less I could give a hoot about.

Yes. But the generally only cover one for 5 years up to 150k.
I hope to have it 10 and 200k.

So in searching for these beasts I have come to find 2 things.

I can get a LOADED 2012 EL with 50k miles for $23k or I can get a fairly simple 2015 or 2016 with 60k+ for about $26k.

I know the 5.4L Tritons has spark plug issues in the early years but if I am not mistaken should be rectified along with the cam phased issues.

I am kind of leaning towards the 2012 as the wife appreciates the added creature comforts.

Times like this make me frustrated that I try to be responsible with our money. Just do what so many do finance a new one for some silly term of like 8 years. Not put a large chunk of cash down on it have it paid off in under 3 years and drive it with no payment for 7+ years.

personally I would buy a used Tundra for that kind of money. you should be able to duplicate the price vs mileage and have a better truck. I would not buy an ecoboost myself. Don't ask me why. I just wouldn't.

The Tundra has no 3rd row seating. And silly Toyota has no extra long SUVs.

Haven't heard much about the Ecoboost, certain things you can't do with it (additives, starting fluid, etc...)

5.4 has the two piece spark plugs, You need a special $85 socket to change them yourself, (or tempt fate with a regular socket) or have it done at the dealer. Class action lawsuit made it so the dealer has to bill Ford if the plug job goes bad and they have to pull the head.

Spooling a turbo or opening eight big ones. Personal preference.

Options can be added later. If you are mechanically inclined, you can add cameras, radios, HIDs, radio buttons on the steering wheel, push button start, power options, upholstery, etc... later as your budget allows.

I highly recommend a factory shop manual. Lesser manuals would make fixing it about as big of a pain in the rear as it was for you to get your 10mm P220. Big Grin

Spark plug issues were resolved after a build date of November 2007.

Cam Phasor issues I am not sure when those were resolved. Mine is at the dealer right now (2008 model with Oct 2007 build date) for what they believe are the cam phasors. They haven't torn it apart yet. It ran perfect the day before, start it in the morning and it instantly ran like a diesel engine and check engine light. I have 102k miles and always taken care of. I had the plugs changed at 95k and no issues with any broken ones. Other than that, no issues on the motor. BUT, they don't make a whole lot of power for 5.4L and the gas mileage dropped off about 2 MPG at around the 50k mile mark. I average 14 with 60/40 city/highway. The eco boost is a lot more powerful motor.

I thought the 2 piece plugs went away with the 2008 model year and were changed for 2009 and later?

Not too terribly concerned with power as this is mainly a people mover.
It will do a little bit of light towing but nothing major.

The 2012 while low miles seemed to be pretty beat down so it was a no go.

Going tomorrow for a 2016 EL XLT 4wd with 50k miles.
Local dealership offers a lifetime Drivetrain warranty, (Engine, transmission, 4wd system). Just need to make sure I am clear on the stipulations for that coverage.
Those are the big ticket items as this model does not have all the bells and whistles which is what I want.
Will add seat heaters for the wife. Hope it goes well. Only downfall is that it is white.

The cause of the cam phaser issue is the weakening of the oil pump over time reduces oil flow to the cam phasers. Have your dealer install the Melling oil pump, not Ford part. Even if you have to pay for it yourself! https://www.amazon.com/Melling...Engine/dp/B002ED1NC0

C'mon on now, don't be a cheapskate. You can get a 2018 Lincoln Navigator, black label edition for just under 100k. Your neighbors will be so jealous. You may have some trouble finding 15yr financing though.

We just turned in our leased Explorer that had 3 seating rows. 42K super clean 3.5L. Loaded.

We got a new Explorer Sport which also has third row seating. It has a 3.5Turbo.

We had zero problems with the other one, of course only 42K miles, so none were expected.
Explorer might work for you with kids.

Have you checked Carmax? You can basically pick and choose what you want, and if they don't have something local they can ship something up. Usually for little or no cost. When I was looking they would ship a car to MA from as far as OH at no cost.

The process was painless. Yeah you'll pay a bit more but it's as simple as going to the store and buying anything else.

Even if I splurged sold some guns and organs the neighbor would not even bat an eye. He has got a Lamborghini HE is currently fabricating a custom twin turbo kit for amongst a few other rides that would be the talk of any cars and coffee.

CarMax is running about 5k more for the identical Expeditions.

I'm not keeping this one, I'm ordering a 2018 any day now. They tested the oil pressure, it is 63 PSI at idle, so I don't think the oil pump is weak. They tore it apart and both cam phasors were bad, they replaced both along with associated parts (I did not do timing chain and related for the extra $1k while they were in there since I'm not keeping it). The bill was $2800 including coolant, 1 coil plug, oil change, cam phasors and a new belt. It sucks spending 40% of the trucks value right before I was planning on replacing it anyways. Other than this episode it has been good to me.....in 10 years only replaced heater core hoses, both front window regulators, 1 starter and 2 front a/c blower motors. Never had a leave me on the side of the road break down.

I never realized it, but around 55-60k miles the truck lost 20% in fuel economy, but it was right around the time I switched to Michelin LTX tires and at very light throttle seemed like the timing was a touch off, a little roughness sound (very slight). After the cam phasors were done, the motor runs like a brand new motor, smooth and more power, and the 20% in lost fuel economy instantly came back.

The 2 piece plugs were eliminated Dec 2007 build date and newer. My 2008 was built in Nov 2007 and has them.

OP= quite frankly I'd go for 2015 and newer with the 3.5liter. Check out www.offleaseonly.com as they usually get/sell lots of expeditions at very good prices.
