Possession (not carry, POSSESSION) of a handgun inside NYC is illegal without a permit issued by the city. LOTS of people have gotten arrested just for driving through NYC with a handgun, passing through on the way from one state to another, and have had to actually convince a judge they were covered under FOPA. It's some real next-level police state bullshit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...w_York#New_York_City Some little tidbits: "NYC premises-only licenses are the licenses issued to average citizens who cannot show a need for self-defense greater than any another average citizen. They are clearly marked: RESTRICTED - NOT FOR CARRY and require the licensee to obtain special permission from the NYPD License Bureau to leave the city with the handgun, unless hunting with a valid hunter authorization card." After you get the license to own a handgun, you have to GET PERMISSION to take YOUR HANDGUN out of the city. "Transporting the handgun to and from a target range is permitted, but the firearm must be unloaded and in a locked container directly to and from a range within city limits." Yep, not even to a shooting range outside the city. "NYC's firearms policies require that special permission must be obtained from City Hall for military members to carry weapons while performing their official duties within the city limits. For example, in November 2012, then-mayor Michael Bloomberg denied a request by the New York National Guard for its members to carry service weapons to help maintain order in devastated parts of the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, calling the presence of armed service members in Brooklyn "a bad idea," and further stating, "The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns."" Jesus. "Even with federal protections for those who properly secure their firearms and ammunition while transiting through New York, some police agencies in New York (notably the New York State Police and the New York Police Department) do not recognize the federal Firearm Owners Protection Act, and may still detain or arrest travelers, and place such travelers in a situation where they have to reference FOPA as an affirmative defense to criminal charges in court proceedings." "Yonkers requires a handgun license before one may ask for a license to own a BB or pellet handgun." Oh, and also, the state of New York requires a license to own a handgun, but the state license isn't valid in NYC. It's not exactly related, but the state of New York also bans what are termed "gravity knives." That's any knife that can be opened with "the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force." NYC interprets that to mean that any knife that you can open by flicking your wrist (and you can do this with damned near any folding knife if you try hard enough) is illegal. Most of New York ignores the law, but thousands of people get arrested every year in New York City for breaking it. Not as an add-on to charges when someone is arrested for more serious crimes, either. Plenty of those people got arrested just walking down the street because an NYPD officer saw a knife in his pocket. Bills have been introduced the last four years in a row to try to change the law but it hasn't happened yet. In January, a bill was passed and the governor vetoed it. NYC is basically its own little fascist country.

You would be wiser not to go there at all. Elk There has never been an occasion where a people gave up their weapons in the interest of peace that didn't end in their massacre. Great Yelp Review Not terrible for the price. Definitely good if you're a single traveler. Not really a place I like having my kid, the vending machine has condoms, lube, and baby oil if you catch my drift. Smells very smoky. I paid $98 for a night which is a great price. The also have hourly rates for the boom boomers.

This can happen while flying, too. Several years ago I had an acquaintance who was flying with his gun (unloaded, checked baggage, etc.) in NE US. I can't remember why, but his flight got diverted to NYC and he had to change planes there. He got arrested for illegal weapons possession and ended up pleading to a misdemeanor, IIRC. The Bloomberg quote is corrrect, but it was Cuomo who nixed arming the NG during the relief operations. NYC has no authority what so ever to stop any component of the military from carrying arms while performing military duty. _____________________________ 'I'm pretty fly for a white guy'.

The Guard reports to the governor unless they are federalized, then they are under command of the US military. I have been to NYC on protection details while with a federal agency. I liked the NYPD coppers just fine, but I can't understand why anyone would want to go to that city if they didn't have to. CMSGT USAF (Retired) Chief of Police (Retired)

The police are allowed to take AS LONG AS THEY WANT in a court room to open a knife with centrifugal force. It could take them 30 minutes to get it to open once and you're still screwed. I know of some knives that would be physically impossible to open that way (too strong of retention and no where to grab the blade, which is usually how they get them open in court). I would love to see a cop sit there in court trying to get it open.

You got that right, all for a Smith and Wesson that can be replaced. Now he will have no S&W and a felony conviction. I would have just went home without it. _________________________ "Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it." Truth is, that part of Brooklyn is really a pretty decent area and not where you'd need to sleep with a gun under your pillow (or mattress as the case may be). I used to live a few miles away and went to the gym next door to that Motel every day. The gym is always loaded with off duty cops who live in Bayridge and Dyker Heights. Crazy as it'll sound to many of of you, I loved living in Brooklyn. --------------------------------------- Life Member NRA “If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to.
