I agree. Folks do not realize that Texas had episodes of voter fraud in the last national elections. Illegals use fake SS#s, I have no problem with passports or birth certificates.
I'm with you. I have both BC and Passport available and am good to go.

My wife and I applied for our Real Drivers License a couple of weeks ago. Not only did we need the passport or birth certificate,a picture ID, but we also had to take 2 bills each with each name and home address that showed we really lived at that residence. It was a pain but worth it. It took only 3 days to get the new issued one in the mail.

Got mine 2 years ago. Had all the documentation, the clerk ran her finger tips around the “raised” seal like she was reading braille. She said, thanks Ed, see ya around town.” I went to school with the folks at our DMV..grade school all the way through high school.

We live in a small town people know you from birth! It cost me a sawbuck, I guess I can get into some federal bldgs and airports. We don’t have any federal bldgs or an airport within 50 miles one way. But, i’ve Got my Gold Star license to prove who I am.

My Texas DL is already REAL ID compliant. I don't know how it got that way. I don't recall taking a birth certificate to any renewals, but maybe I did. I still have a certified copy my mom ordered from Taylor County 57 years ago when I was born.

It’s all about confirming that people are who they claim to be. If we think it’s important for people to be who they claim to be before being allowed to do various things, then the process needs to be rigorous enough to ensure that as much as possible.

Be careful about that. My current MD drivers license has the “Real ID” star and was issued that way when I renewed a couple of years ago because Maryland was told by .fed that existing licenses (or licensees, anyway) could be grandfathered in if they were issued before such and such a date. At some point, that directive changed and we now have until a certain date (mine is late in the fall) to go to the MVA with our documents or else our licenses will be suspended!

I would imagine you might be in a similar situation if you don’t remember going with your stack of evidence when you last renewed.

Tn has been doing that for over 10 years. I needed to get a certified Birth Certificate to renew my drivers license. We also have to show ID to vote

I renew my DL here in Texas online, but I think it was 2 yrs ago I had to go in since they wanted a new picture taken. They needed another form of picture ID and the only thing I had was my concealed handgun license which worked.

What irks me about this is that if you do something like change your address, you have to show the birth certificate again - the same one you showed to get the license in the first place. Roll Eyes

$25 more, provide the documents mentioned in the OP, and you get the Gold Star on your DL. Apparently the Gold Star is the universal symbol for a RealID.

Nope! Texas was doing this prior to having Real ID compliance. I moved back to Texas about this time 3 years ago and had to bring my passport to get a DL. However, Texas DLs were not Real ID compliant until Fall '16 so I had to get a new Real ID compliant DL prior to late 2020 deadline. I killed 2 birds with 1 stone by getting a motorcycle endorsement and the DL was Real ID compliant.

I have a Real ID and never showed a birth certificate or even a social security card. I showed them my military ID though and they were satisfied with that. I have since already renewed once without issue.

Regardless, I never use my driver's license when I fly even though I fly a ton. For that I use my passport card.

I didn’t bother getting a Real ID license.
I paid for the passport so might as well get more use out of it.

When my last updated DL picture was taken, I had to show my BC or passport. When I asked why I was told “to verify citizenship”.
Telling them I did that when I got my first license at 16 of course fell on deaf ears.

That's what I did. PSA to others with expiring passports, the time to renew is now. There's going to be quite a rush next year as RealID goes into effect.

You'll need a RealID or valid passport for any airline travel, even domestic.

Rob, I am sure you know but just in case. MD will let you make an appointment now to bring in the extra paperwork. From what I have heard it makes the process and time it takes a lot less painful.

I'm going in to get my Real ID.

Intending to bring:
1) Passport card
2) SS card and/or W2
3) Registrations for 2 cars (copies okay)

Question: They require us to bring in the original for #1, 2 (copies only allowed for #3). Are they just checking #1, #2 and maybe make a photocopy at the DMV using the originals? They don't keep #1 or #2, right? I'm not comfortable with that. And it's hard to imagine that they would be allowed to keep my original #1 or #2.

But our government is stupid so just wanted to check w/ those who have gone through the process already.

Actually, my understanding at least in this stupid state is that Real ID is required because there are states that have been and will continue to issue DL to illegals.

So, no docs and you get a DL. Real ID for legal residents you need to jump through hoops.
