Ohio has been doing the realid thing. I just got mine. Wasn’t that big of a hassle. I rarely fly. Only place I used my passport was Canada. I got the realid because they’re going to require it to visit military bases.

So, no docs and you get a DL. Real ID for legal residents you need to jump through hoops.

My state has the pleasure of bordering Illinois, and they are the prime example of this BS. I've been encountering "Temporary Visitor Drivers Licenses" at work that are issued by the state of IL, and are good for two years. It's a valid driver's license, with a photo, but at the top it says "not valid for identification purposes" or something to that effect. WTF is that supposed to mean?!?! The state of IL is issuing DLs to people who they can't even confirm who they are? Only in the liberal mind does that make sense.

A DL presumably means that at least some competency as a driver and knowledge of traffic laws were shown, and a fee was paid. So there is some benefit to it.

Yes, yes. And so that they can get insurance supposedly. Although, an underlying question remains - why are illegals allowed to remain in the country?

Anybody have any insights into documentation handling? Does DMV keep copies (or worse, originals) of the requested docs? Or do they just check it visually without keeping copies (and especially originals)?

Intending to bring:
1) Passport card
2) SS card and/or W2
3) Registrations for 2 cars (copies okay)

Question: They require us to bring in the original for #1, 2 (copies only allowed for #3). Are they just checking #1, #2 and maybe make a photocopy at the DMV using the originals? They don't keep #1 or #2, right? I'm not comfortable with that. And it's hard to imagine that they would be allowed to keep my original #1 or #2.

But our government is stupid so just wanted to check w/ those who have gone through the process already.

My understanding, this is in Maryland your state may be different, they copy everything and you keep it. Your new license is mailed to you at a later date. I guess they check your paperwork to ensure it is all good.

Went through the process.

They keep a copy of everything you bring.

Thoughts:
1) DMV fucked this up for all of us leading to the need for Real ID versions. They should pay for the cost of upgrading from normal to real id.
2) utilities are in my name. To prove residency for my wife, I need to order a certified copy of our marriage certificate. DMV should pay for this too. But for the DMV providing licenses to illegals, I wouldn’t have to go through this.

I hate Dems.

They digitally scan the documents. If you are lucky they don’t screw up and lose the scan, adding three trips and over three months to the process while they try to figure out where they screwed up and how to to unscrew the process.
