A Navy ship named for slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk, who served four years in the Navy before being forced out, was christened by a transgender veteran and launched in San Diego Bay on Saturday.

Milk was one of the first openly gay candidates elected to public office. He was serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978 when a former political colleague, Dan White, assassinated him and Mayor George Moscone at City Hall.

The replenishment oiler USNS Harvey Milk slid down the shipyard ways after a bottle of champagne was smashed on the bow by former Navy officer Paula M. Neira, clinical program director for the John Hopkins Center for Transgender Health.

Milk's nephew, Stuart Milk, and Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro watched the traditional ceremony.

Personally couldn't give a rats ass.

I only care that those serving on board do their damn job.

It doesn't bother me who it's named after or their preferences.

Well as a Navy guy I do object. Ship names used to be points of pride, sacrifice, history. Now, not so much. Tell you what Otto, how about we take away your utilities, dress your unit up in French maid outfits and we all say, “I don’t care what they are wearing as long as they do their jobs?” Hmm, bother you yet?

Yeah. I would not want to be assigned that ship. The Navy is really pushing this issue. I agree with Carville that this stupid wokefulness must stop.

Is the ship painted rainbow? Is the ships named after someone who would be deemed dishonorable?

I'd wager the dude had a lot of pride sacrifice and history. It may not be the kind you agree with but I don't personally care about that either.

Doesn't bother me. Long as the assholes don't crash this one I'm okay with it.

I propose the following for the next group of ships.

USS Lee Harvey Oswald
USS Benedict Arnold
USS Theodore Bundy
USS Charles Manson
USS Jeffrey Dalmer

Since names don't matter why not?

That's very fucking ignorant.

Is the man a dishonorable man?

Comparing someone to Dahmer because why?

I don’t see where he said “names don’t matter”…..he said as long as the name isn’t after someone dishonorable….I have no idea who the ship is named after but I think he’s saying if the guy was gay….who cares

That's exactly what I'm saying, and I'm all ears for hearing an actual argument as to why this shouldn't be happening.

The only one I can buy is that it's more agenda than anything, but again, doesn't hurt me that they want to appear to be more inclusive. Doesn't change the size of the deck guns.

Ok, let’s be reasonable. Naming ships used to be apolitical. Subs were fish, battleships were states, cruisers were cities, etc. We starting naming dead presidents and historical figures. Then they weren’t even dead yet. Then they started naming them after people who either had absolutely no connection to the Navy or minimally so as in this case.

This is ridiculous and the only saving grace, if you can call it that, is that it’s a USNS ship. If all we care about is your trite “not running into things” comment then let’s just assign side numbers.

His honor has nothing to do with this discussion. I suspect you know that though and are just enjoying your trolling moment tonight. So I guess enjoy your heart out.

There will always be an England! USS Elton John. As long as you aren’t dishonorable is apparently how you name Navy ships now. Ok, got it.

History, tradition, meaningless tripe.
