We are somewhat perplexed. We met our new neighbors yesterday. They came to visit us as we have been moving into the new house for a few days. It was a bit hectic as they had their 2 small children with them.

Anyhow, the handed us a casserole and told us what it was and then handed us a jar of pickles with no explanation. We started chatting about stuff, usual pleasantries and then they were on their way. We hardly even realized they gave us pickles. The rice casserole had chicken and cut up veggies, corn, carrots, peas. I can see no way pickles goes with it.

So are they just being funny, or is there maybe some custom behind it that I don't know?

These go to eleven.

They probably make their own pickles.

And, if your family becomes friends with their family, you'll get pickles every holiday! (And whenever you watch their kids)

Were the pickles sweet or sour? Might make a difference.

Homemade or store bought?

When I first moved in here one of my "neighbors" gave me 3 dozen eggs. This last Christmas I got cookies and homemade pomegranate jelly from my other neighbor. Guess who had a plowed driveway all winter.... Wink

They're used to be this thing called "nice people" and "good neighbors". Maybe they're trying to revive these outdated customs. I think you should sue them.

It is a nice gesture on their behalf. It is probably homemade pickles and a dish they feel they make well; not necessarily meant to go with each other.

I've heard that it's when they give you a pineapple that you need to be concerned.

LOL.
Generally, neighbors will offer what they do best.
If the pickles are nasty, just thank them for the casserole when you return the pan. If you lie and tell them how much you loved the pickles, they will continue to bring you pickles.
If you like the pickles, let them know.

seriously tho,

they are being neighborly,

they know you are busy unpacking etc etc, and know you may want a nice home cooked meal, or casserole,

Not homemade. Vlasic dill. We were happy to have nice neighbors. I was just curious if there is some cultural significance. The woman’s name is Yanka. So definitely European. If not cultural I thought they may be awesome people just for doing something different to make us wonder.

I think your neighbors are an eleven.

We've moved a lot over the past 15 years, and no one has brought us a casserole much less pickles.
However in the house we bought in Arizona as a rental, I caught the neighbor cleaning up our leaves and mowing our lawn in the front yard. He also lent me a ladder. We took them out to dinner and look forward to seeing them again.

They brought the casserole for a meal moving can take time and wanted you to not worry about having to make a meal. Just guessing maybe home made pickles. Take it as a kind gesture. A thank you card telling how much it meant to receive their gift. Good neighbors make it so much easier to live in an area.
