Saw Clapton in a Greensboro, NC concert many years ago. His "surprise" guest was Pete Townshend. What a jam.

He never used them. That Pewter Strat and the similar sounding Red one were built in the 80's for him by Fender with Alnico II stacked single coils (to reduce hum) and a mid-boost preamp. The crappy sound is due to the Boss Overdrive and oh-so-80's Boss Chorus pedal that he should never ever have used.

The Strats Fender has built for him after those two had much more powerful mid-boost preamps (about double the range of the earlier ones), and he finally dropped the pedals for Soldano SLO-100 amps which are a bit more powerful (!)

I saw him at the Palace of Auburn Hills in 1994 on the "From the Cradle" Tour. All Blues all night, with his low power Tweed Twin repros. It was the best I've seen him play, except for really old stuff from the 60's.

And ALL NIGHT some stupid bitch next to me thought it was time to talk with her friend every time the singing stopped and there was just guitar playing. And of course asked "when is he going to play Wonderful Tonight" or "Lay Down Sally?".

Yeah, he's not. This is a blues show, this is what we've been waiting for since Derek and the Dominos broke up, STFU and listen.

The Beatles quit around 1970. Layla came out late November that year.
Patti left George in 1974.
Married Eric in 1979. Legend says that the 3 Beatles present at the wedding, no John, performed Sgt Pepper live for the couple. George and Eric were friends again.
Later Patti divorced Eric, allegedly she couldn’t give him children so he dumped her.
Eric fathered a boy in following years but he died tragically hence Tears from Heaven

Pattie wrote her side of the story in the book Wonderful tonight, George Harrison, Eric Claton and me.

Ms. Boyd must have been the greatest intimate partner in all history, having been the inspiration to *three* hit songs (Something, Layla and Wonderful Tonight).

There are 10-11 songs that were inspired by her.
Add to the list of more popular ones George’s I need you, If i needed someone and For you blues.
Also Eric’s Bell bottom blues.

Ugh. Me, too. He could literally have any guitar/amp combo and this is what he picks? *shrug* I can confidently say that my tone is superior. Big Grin

I always thought Layla had such a great riff. That’s probably why I don’t like the acoustic version.

Good to know about his gear. I’m surprised to learn he was using Boss stuff, but it was the 90’s.

Oh, I’m familiar. For many years, I had a Soldano SP-77 preamp, which is the whole preamp section of the SLO. It is savage. They were hard to find when I bought mine in 2003, and I sold it to some guy in Israel for more than twice what I paid for it in 2010. It’s the one amp or piece of one that I always regretted letting go. Never seen one pop up for sale since, they are hen’s teeth.

You'll never hear it sound as good as the original again. Duane's been gone for over 50 years now.

Layla came on the radio where I worked a few years ago and I asked a young girl what she thought of the song. After a few seconds she replied “sounds like elevator music”. That’s when I knew how old I was.

Don’t sweat it. The music kids listen to today is by and large garbage. It takes no talent to make, there is very little by way of actual instrumentation, and most bands don’t even write it themselves.

We saw Eric in May of 1992 at the St. Pete sun dome. Incredible concert and one of my favorite memories.

I'd give anything to been at the tribute concert for George. RIP, Darkhorse. You are missed.

Listen to Tedeschi Trucks Band "Layla Revisited" concert album.

The did the entire album without announcing it in advance during a show in late 2019. Derek Trucks is the spiritual successor of Duane in so many ways. I saw him a couple times with the Allman Brothers, but he has continued to get better since then. Trey Anastasio and Doyle Bramhall joined in for the concert too.

It's really that good.

Wow. They nailed it.

I saw Susan a couple of times as a solo many years ago. A friend of mine was her guitar wrangler on one tour. Need to see the band once the world opens.

Clapton did a mini-concert in an alley behind a leather goods store in Skokie, Illinios in the summer of 1969 with Delaney & Bonnie.

I was there...and so was Ginger Baker...
