What is the condition? VKH or Uveodermatologic syndrome ( I am guessing from the description)? What were the meds the vet was using to treat? Between our family and my in-laws we have had Akitas for 3 decades and fostered and worked with many Akita groups. I know quality of life and the resources to support are always the foremost factors in a situation like this. Just trying for a 5 yard bump here that maybe there is available options. If your vet is on point and the decision has been made please accept my condolences and know there are many of us who have been there.

The Uveo Syndrome sounds right. I don't have a list of the meds tried, but I do know that massive doses of steroids was the only thing that even touched it. The side effects darn near killed her, primarily weight gain and an enormously enlarged liver. Pretty obvious that was not going to work as an on-going treatment. The vet has consulted with other vets and the breeder has been breeding/raising Akitas for a lot of years and both concur that everything has been tried.
Resources were a consideration, but not the determining factor in the decision. This message has been edited. Last edited by: PHPaul,
Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

More than likely VKH. Akitas are one of the few breeds to see this disease as common and the usual course of treatment is massive amounts of Prednisone (Oral and Topical steroid used as an immunosuppressive). Side effect would have been eventual blindness and loss of pigmentation skin/hair.
I love this breed and your families is a beautiful Akita.
I am sorry for your loss.

I hate these posts. I have had pets my whole life and losing one is always heartbreaking. You know what though, their lives and our lives were made better , our souls were made better by having them in our lives.
