I've posted a few pictures of Fate, the Akita I share with my daughter.

Something more than a year ago, she developed a skin ailment that is particular to Akitas (I don't recall the medical term) that led to open sores on her nose, in her ears and along her spine.

Since that time, we've tried every available treatment with no lasting success. One or two meds that worked temporarily had horrible side effects and she has very little quality of life left. If we don't treat her, she's miserable, if we do she's lethargic to the point of being a lump of fur and even then the improvement is only marginal.

It is the opinion of the vet (who has been super through the whole thing, giving us every break she could and trying everything under the sun to control the situation) and the breeder we got her from that it's time to end her misery. Fate has been a trouper throughout, but it's time.

I've been here far too many times in a lifetime of pets and it doesn't get any easier. Daughter is devastated but knows it's the Right Thing.

Just needed to get this off my chest.

Thank you for sharing.

Hope it helped a little...

Thoughts your way . Can't stand the thought of losing a fur kid but I'm sure you gave Fate a wonderful life.

Hardest thing to do and it never gets easy. We all know the “right thing” to do, nonetheless, the hole in the heart just doesn’t want to heal. My condolences. Frown

Gosh I hate these threads, always so heartbreaking. I know it is probably cold comfort, but I hope you can see this s ending Fate’s suffering as the last act of kindness you can perform.

One of the hardest things I have had to do in life is put a loved pet down. They simply are the best of what we should be.

My condolences.

Sad news. When you have done everything possible, but she is still suffering, as well as a poor quality of life...time to sadly end her suffering.

You did all you could. Don't blame yourself it was just bad luck.
