It is not a PhD, it not even close to a PhD. Doesn't take nearly the time, work, or original research as a PhD.

It is just another example of our public education system gaming the rules to extract more money from the taxpayers with nothing to show for it in return.

No other discipline in the world has an equivalent to the EdD. None. Think about that.

Well . . . my law degree is called a juris doctor, and while it is a useful degree, but is in no way the equivalent to a "real" doctorate. It is much more like a master's degree. calling it a Juris Doctor inflates it a lot like an EdD.

But, even the most egomaniacal lawyer won't want to be called doctor. I have met a few lawyers that want to be called Doctor, and they have generally been mediocre to bad lawyers seeking status. And all the other lawyers make fun of them.

My oldest daughter has Bachelors degrees in both Food Science and Bio Chemistry. She has Masters degrees in both as well and a PhD in Food Science.

Her fiancé has a Bachelors, Masters, and PhD in Electrical Engineering.

How should I address them, Doctor Doctor?

To clarify, we called the lawyer I mention “Dr” just when we were teasing him/we’d mention the PhD when it was relevant. (He did legal work related to his PhD.)

If someone wants to call someone else "Dr." that is, in my opinion, fine. It that someone else insists that you call them "Dr." that act, in and of itself, should be mocked (a lot).

I got into it with my daughter and some of her friends who were offended by the WSJ. It was kind of fun to rattle them but these people are honey badgers. I took the article to be a poke at the pathetic insistence by people with PhD that they be called "Dr."
apparently there's a lot more...

Here's from the "Notable and Quotable" in today's WSJ.

A Dec. 13 Twitter thread by Sarah Parcak, a professor of archaeology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a fellow at the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation:

I know everyone is angry about what Joseph Epstein wrote about Dr Biden yesterday in the @WSJ However the real aim for our ire should be @jamestaranto the editor of their op-ed page. He has, so far, completely escaped accountability. That ends now.

James, explain yourself. When 3k+ Americans die daily from covid, millions suffer w food insecurity +eviction, major sedition happening, racism, climate change...you give space to an angry old white misogynist to yell at our future 1st lady re her Ed.D?

“Well it started a national conversation” you might argue. Yes, the conversation goes “F— the WSJ, F—Joseph Epstein, and F— their trash op-ed pages.”

Living Human Garbage Monster™ Paul Gigot, WSJ head opinion editor *doubled down* on the Dr Jill Biden opinion piece, saying “She is open to criticism”. Hey @WSJ writers, are you cool with blatant sexism and misogyny and slander against women?

I understand. If a lawyer has a real PhD or MD, call her doctor all day. But not on the strength of the JD.

LTCHEG has valid points. I have two nephews who are physicians. My brother, their dad has a PhD in physics and is a physicist for NASA. Their sister/daughter is getting a PhD in math (not math education) and everyone agrees she is the smartest one of the lot. My brother, who is also a physician, believes our brother’s PhD in physics was harder than medical school and something he couldn’t have done.

From a historical perspective, lawyers and clergy were the only professionals entitled to privilege of communications. Doctors weren’t allowed to claim the privilege as they were considered quacks. I’m not sure when that changed but it would be in modern times. And clearly, form a historical perspective, a PhD was much more prestigious than someone claiming to be a medical doctor.

When I was in law school, we were curious why the JD was considered a doctorate. So one day, we started researching various graduate and doctoral programs. The table below lists the average for each degree beyond beyond a BA/BS:

Masters: 30-40

MBA: 43

EdD: 90

JD: 90

PhD: 60-120. If you already have a MS/MA the amount goes down proportionally.

MD/DO: 164 give or take. The last two years have a lot of clinical rotations so it is more difficult to quantify the hours.

Who? I mean, Doctor Who?

My friend J has a PhD. It's fun to refer to him as Dr. J, knowing he's no better at basketball than me (and I'm really not good).

God bless America.

I know a man who for three months worked as the president of a small Christian university while they searched for a new one.

They gave him an honorary doctorates for his help. He went by doctor from that point on. He was a douche.

The best are lawyers with a Juris Doctorate who want to be called Dr. Fortunately, almost none do. Basically, it was a bachelors-level law degree until the lawyers decided amongst themselves to promote their degree status.

My wife is a career elementary school teacher and is amazing. I have the utmost respect for the hard work they do and BS they have to put up with parents. All of that said, on the pecking order of doctoral level jobs, it is low, but above a law degree, IMHO.
