I've lived in the Phoenix area for the last 11 years and have not heard any gunfire on New Years or any other time for that matter.

We did have some fireworks for about 30 minutes but that is part of New Years.

You're embellishing the story a bit I would say.

Just as good as walking up to a trailer for a disturbance one New Years Eve and a door opening up on the trailer that was just passed and an AK coming out letting out about a half a mag into the still night sky. Some Under-roos were retired that night....

no, perhaps there are only law abiding people there now,
