Any toyota....although I'm starting to sway a little toward a KIA sorento rather than a highlander.

I gotta say that I'd love a new Tacoma but my 2003 4Runner with the 4.7L V8 is hard to beat. I love the power and with almost 257k miles she's still running strong. I need new U joints, brakes and front axles. After that, I'm good to go. The only bad is my catalytic converters. I will probably buy a new Tundra in a couple of years. I don't think I can live with a V6 in the Tacoma. Plus the price isn't very different between the two.

"that with nothing more than routine maintenance, that being fluid changes, brakes, wipers, filters, tires, the thing would be dead nuts reliable would you have??? No worries about expensive electronics, motors, transmissions, 4wd/AWD, going out all of it just flat works as intended."

Per OP question, my last 2 JK jeeps fit that description very well.

2010 Ford SVT Raptor. Everything that has broken has been my own fault. I just wish tires were cheaper, buying one or more sets per year is killing me.

Well, you did say reliable and affordable so Based on my experience with my 2012 Genesis I'll go with it or if I'm feeling rich and good looking I'll go with the 400+hp v8. Nothing like rwd V8. It's got handling characteristics between Lexus and BMW along with great reliability at a much better price.

Correction, an air-cooled Porsche 911, preferably like my 993. None of that water/coolant/anti-freeze BS. About as reliable as any car can come, without all of that ho-hum boring crap. As for the affordability factor; well-cared for examples with honest use are still affordable from a private seller, just like a now 20+ year-old car should be. Still over twice as much as they were a decade ago, but cheaper than many well-optioned fullsize SUVs. Low mileage 993s however are now treated and valued as if they're precious diamonds, gold and myrrh. Phooey.

I will say that the 3-axle Merc earlier in the thread is definitely cool, though...but unless I put up one of my properties for sale, it's well beyond my means.

I don't know that I'd call a 993 affordable in the grand scheme of things haha. Being that you're obviously a 993 lover, here's a unicorn we did a clutch and full service on a few months ago. Factory speed yellow over full yellow interior, 3k original miles Eek It doesn't get much better as far as P cars go. It's part of a LARGE collection that includes a yellow LaFerrari, three 599's (aperta, GTO, and GTB), 458 Speciale, 430 Scuderia, etc. Im not sure what the 993tt-s is worth, I'd imagine it's one of the lowest mile ones in the world in a private collection. My guess would be north of $6-700,000? Hemmings has a speed yellow turbo-S for sale with 30k more miles for $400k.

A 993 Turbo S brings hideous money these days. Only 183 were built for worldwide consumption; reported numbers vary on how many made it to North America, but it's definitely well less than half that were originally imported into the U.S. A local dealer was trying to sell one earlier this year for around $800k; I think they still have it...if anyone's interested. Wink

Me? I'll stick to my plain old Carrera 2. Around $55-60k in its current condition these days, significant more if it were a garage queen, lower mileage car. I bought mine for $25k 10 yrs ago, just about the same time I bought my first SIG pistol, a P229. I was looking for a daily runner, found it back east, and paid less for it than we did for my wife's Mazda6 sedan that she wanted.

Yeah, they aren't cheap to fix if something significant breaks or wears out. Example: I rebuilt the top end a couple of years ago for worn valve guides (known problem with 993s) and replacing tired oil seals; dropping the engine for that work by a dealer would set you back $10-12k, $7-9k by a more-than-competent quality Porsche specialist shop. Replacement factory parts are equally pricey, which is annoying but not surprising given the relatively limited production numbers that Porsche builds cars at. Pelican Parts has been my friend, especially when they have specials.

Even with the maintenance costs, it's got more far character than a new Subaru BRZ, what $25k will buy in a sports car today.

EDIT: I must add that I've never been much of a fan of Speed Yellow.

I totally agree with everything you said! The new ones are FAST, especially with the 991.2's all being turbo, but nothing compares to driving and looking at an aircooled Porsche. The only downside is the factory heat SUCKS.

I stopped driving my 993 in winters; getting the damn vent system to defog the windows is a serious waste of time and gasoline.

Daily driver. But affordable. That’s a big constraint.

Mine would likely have to be a used model. But I’d like to have a sporty convertible like an IS or Miata. Either that or something very comfy like a used LS.

That being said, we tend to actually get Camry / Corolla.

I'm on my second LS430 in the last two years.

Long story short, they have both been low cost & maintenance. Comfy, safe, reliable, with plenty of power.

Cheers~

You know... my dad just retired and bought his dream car, a 991 911 Carrera S and now I have serious car envy. I constantly browse autotrader for 2009 - 2012 997 911 Carrera S but all I ever find below $65k with low mileage is manuals or odd color combos. I may just return to sanity and continue driving my incredibly boring Japanese car.

Man, I couldn't imagine having a Porsche in anything but a manual. Seriously.
