Illegal to search your phone? Nope. You will give them permission when you agree to the EULA. Collecting dust.

As noted in the footnotes in my OP:
And, as also noted in the OP footnotes: All plans to acquire additional Apple products are on hold. (Probably permanently canceled, in reality.) I may do away with my Apple Watch and go back to a traditional, "unconnected" watch. Normally I'd have the Watch on, by now. I currently find the idea of wearing it... distasteful
I doubt I'm going to immediately replace all our iThings with other stuff--though that's not entirely out of the question, but, if nothing else, Apple is no longer a shoe-in when replacement time comes.
"Don't like?" Heh. That's putting it mildly indeed.
That statement is nonsensical. That's like saying you shouldn't bother locking your doors because a determined burglar will get in, if they want, anyway. And, regardless of what your three-letter-agency-brother says, I have a fairly high degree of confidence that nobody is scanning the files on my home server. We're already running Linux. We simply won't be moving to Apple. We used Android before. I switched us to Apple for the perceived mildly improved security and for Apple's rock-solid (at the time) privacy protections. I still have a Google/Android account. I still have apps available to me, many of which for which I paid, and most of which are not available on iOS. (Nor are there any analogs.) Technically still true in a Bill Clinton-esque sense. If it's ONLY on your iPhone it's secure. If it's in iCloud then all bets are off.

While I feel pedophiles should be summarily executed. What is next to be scanned for? I am switching to Signal for messaging as it is encrypted between users. ------------------------------------- Always the pall bearer, never the corpse.

So...
I think you missed the part about how they're going to be installing scanning software on iPhone/iPad/iWhatever users' devices? Sure, initially it's allegedly only going to scan stuff that's going to be sent to iCloud or iMessages, but it would be trivial for them to plant hooks to cause it to scan anything, at any time. ^^^ I can only go by what info is currently available. They say they are only going to scan stuff in iCloud and iMessages to children 13 and under that pass through Apple's servers. Until some hacker actually sniffs out the process by which this happens and tells us what's really going on we won't know. There is going to be a huge fallout from this announcement and Apple may back off. But by announcing it all the pedophiles know in advance and will use stuff less likely for them to get caught. Unless that's part of the plan.

I find the objections raised by several members in this thread to be alarming and suspicious. Therefore I have submitted all of you for scanning. Be well comrades.

You have to be 13 to get your own Apple ID, and provide a credit card number and email address. Under 13 the account has to be set up under a parent's account so that parental controls and family sharing will work. Of course, people can lie and claim a higher age to avoid the complications. But, assuming the parents did it right, Apple will know the age. Then again a whole lot of parents aren't tech-savvy enough to do this right.

Conversation on the subject by some Apple guys (of sorts) ~ kinda long. Bottom line Apple trust is going to get hit here, IMO.

Yeah, kinda long and the audio difference between host and guest is annoying (be prepared to ride the volume control!), but the important questions are all asked & answered, and answered largely in a way understandable by non-techies. My wife was not clear on why I was so freaked out about this. I asked her to watch it with me. Now she understands. Anybody who doesn't understand, after watching this, the critical difference between what Apple's proposing to do and what cloud providers are already doing doesn't want to understand.
As well it should. What Apple's planning is an unprecedented invasion of privacy. "America is at that awkward stage. Starts with saving the children. Then images of guns are verboten unauthorized conversations and associations will be scanned and punished. Being found in banned places will be exposed and loss of societal privileges imposed. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

More like. You are forced to give them permission when you agree to the EULA, otherwise they will deny you access to the phone.

Maybe not for Apple but anything gained is fruits of the poisonous tree for prosecution purposes. But, I seriously doubt this really has anything to do with locking up child predators.
