It's taken me 54 years to fully come to this realization, but I'm simply one of those people that has no rhythm or moves. In short, I can't dance. I should have realized it over 30 years ago in my college dance class, when my hips simply refused to cha-cha or swing or tango. But such is the folly of youth - thinking you're something you're not. But now, after watching some people who really know what they're doing, I have finally admitted to myself that I can't dance.

Fortunately, there is no 'Dance' requirement to have a man-card.

How about you? Can you dance?

Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice - pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

I took required dance lessons and classes on etiquette on Saturday afternoons in 8th grade. It sucked, but I had no choice.

It has not come in handy in many years.

Despite being a very shy person growing up, I took up dancing around 2010 and danced pretty seriously for about eight years....taking lessons and going to various social dances. I dated a dancer at the time and became friends with many in the Chicago dance community. I'd say I became pretty good at various dances, but gave it up when I broke up with my lady friend. I may pick it up again some day, but feel I'd have to do a lot of re-learning.

Not only can I not dance, I've been asked not to dance. My white boy affliction is quite strong.

Nope, I never could dance and don’t. When I was in my 20’s I would go to country clubs and downtown clubs and usually the best way to meet a girl was to ask her to dance but that was out for me. It really sucked when I would have a girl ask me to dance and I had to say that I don’t like to dance but wouldn’t mind chatting. They usually walked away to find someone to dance with. I could have learned the Texas Two Step or something but I just had no interest.

Yes I can, my wife and I have danced a bit. I am a fan of many types of music and enjoy dancing.

I couldn't answer this question any better than this. Thank God my wife can't either so it was never an obstacle in our relationship early on.

Big Grin

Except the lady I was "dancing" with put it much less politely.

Being drunk that night, I found a gal who would dance with me. It turns out she was as bad or worse than me. Being dark and crowded on the floor, I hadn't noticed a key fact. She had a club foot and it turns out was nicknamed "T.H.E. Leg" at her high school.

When I was 18 my mom answered a question over the phone from Arthur Murray studios in Detroit and won 5 free lessons. I was opted to take them. I was given a very persuasive (and excellent) female trainer and I did more or less successfully learn to waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha, samba, and tango at rudimentary levels. I was not persuaded to sign up for more (expensive) lessons. I've not been called upon in my lifetime to demonstrate proficiency in dancing. (I only went on 3 dates in college, and never married.)

I confess that in my 20s I did take up Square Dancing, and actually got fairly good at it. Changes in how clubs followed the standards eventually turned me off and I stopped.

In high school, I joined the newly-formed ballroom dance team. Not that I could dance. I liked a girl in the group and ended up as her partner. The dance numbers included various one and two-arm lifts and a few moves involving a certain amount of centrifugal (or centripetal, if you wish) force. I managed to drop her on the lifts, never having been Charles Atlas or the embodiment of hercules, and succeeded not only in tossing her clear of the dance floor, but off the stage, when it came to the spinning portion. I was supposed to spin her airplane style around me, landing her on the ground, gently. Only, I let go.

My dance career was short lived, and never reattempted.

If she remembers me at all, I'm quite certain that to this day, she probably wouldn't grant me two words.

I think we're all safer in the end.
