Yesterday, we had our monthly fish fry. It's a community nonprofit that I'm apart of. Well anyway I have been down with kidney stones and just getting back on my feet, so I went to volunteer for a bit. Nothing too strenuous mind you.

So anyway I was talking some fish to the serving area and while filling up the tray they serve out of I was talking to the ladies.

As I'm talking. I'm watching even one enjoying their meals. As I'm standing there I see a couple of people eating their hush puppies. One is dipping them into yellow mustard. A lady is dipping it into tartar sauce. Still another malt vinegar.

Now I have never been a real fan of hush puppies, but the ones we serve are damn good. I usually dip mine into cocktail sauce.

So. What says you? like 'em, leave 'em. Who cares about the fish give me the damn hush puppies! or someplace in between?

Plain? Dip 'em? In what?

I just noticed that almost every one was eating them differently. Plus we have had people ask for butter for their hush puppies.

Just interested in some trivial information.

The really good ones, just warm enough, don't need no distraction.

Later as they cool too much, even ~I~ have experimented with a touch of dipping stuff.

Prefer mine warm enough to melt just a bit of butter inside.

Hush Puppies? I thought they were shoes! No, no way would I eat shoe leather no matter what you dip them in!

LOL

Seriously, haven't had them in years but back then it was plain or with a little catsup. Actually rather cornbread meal in regular ol' cornbread rather than hush puppies.

And as an aside much prefer country fries, hash browns, and french fries, all with catsup. Did enjoy "chips" when in England with malt vinegar though.

I always thought syrup like a Karo cane syrup or maple syrup was traditional with hush puppies?

Well, interesting! So far plain is the preferred method of intake of hush puppies!

It seems that there are many different ways to eat 'em. Syrup, now that is interesting. They are kinda like corn bread in a ball, and my mom use to make these corn bread flapjacks with fried Chicken, and my dad put Karo syrup on it.... interesting....I might have to try that.

I have a big box of leftover hush puppies, I have a bunch of Karo syrup (don't ask!). I'll give that a shot for dinner tomorrow night.

Keep it coming, I find this interesting strangely enough!

Hush puppy recipes can vary enough that plain or dip and into what can be a different answer.

Sweet corn hush puppy? Plain, maybe a little Karo.

Onion in it? Tartar or cocktail sauce.

Jalapeño in it? Tend to plain.

good hushpuppies don't need any adornment. we had a great BBQ place north of Richmond (RIP The Smokey Pig) that made amazing ones with onions and kernel corn in them.

Perhaps the ones I tried were sub-par, but I wasn't impressed.

When I was stationed in Pensacola, I went to a church fish fry. Catfish? Yum! Hush puppies? Not so much.

Good thing I was at church cuz I coulda got lynched for not liking the hush puppies. Even there, I suspect I only got a pass because I was a Damn Yankee and didn't know any better. Big Grin
