I did thirty two years...Retired in 2007 and I'm still getting those checks each month!

Retirement. I wanted to do some road trips, hit far more gun shows. Do more shooting. Cast all my pistol bullets, build a nice loading bench. Get the property (32 aces) cleaned up. Maybe buy a Kubota tractor so I could take out some old fences, move some rocks, move some dirt and keep everything mowed down and cleaned up. Bought myself a 2017 Camaro SS, every old guy needs 45 HP. Really enjoying the Camaro. Makes road trips FAR more enjoyable and fun.

Did ALL of it and more.

I think what I enjoy the most is NOT having to REALLY do anything, unless I want to. If today isn't a good day, do it some OTHER day. I love that!

This past year , started to really get into hiking around Montana. Did 60 miles or so through Glacier Park. Looking forward to much more this next year.

Our county average is 3 years.

Before I retired,3 or 4 officers died within a year after they retired,I figure the odds were good...been retired 10 now

The trick is to have something besides "being a cop" that gives you a reason to get up each morning

Wow, I got into this thread late because I was busy, being retired. Mine happened when I was 62. I had heart surgery when I was 61 1/2. Went back in as a "consultant" till I was 62 1/2. Then I took off. When someone asks what I'm going to do, I tell them "take my wife to lunch". That was 100 months ago. I know because we just cashed my 100th monthly check today. After eating out.

People ask if it doesn't get old or tiring. Not yet, and if it does, I'll find something else to get bored with. Guess what we're doing tomorrow. Right, going out to lunch. Smile We go on additional trips from time to time. I'm even still working, sort of. Thursday I need to show an insurance inspector around a building. No one else at the company had a clue. (about many things). Its only 35 miles away. And Lebanon,Ohio has a Golden Turtle Chocolate factory! Smile

It will be 3 years on the last day of the year when I had retired from a 26.5 year LE career.

I have all of the time in the world to go go go, but I mostly stay at home. I watch my bird feeders, feed the deer, watch my YouTube channels I'm subscribed to and I walk my dogs for an hour each day. I kayak fish but not as often as I had imagined due to my back.

My advice is to enjoy life while you are working toward retirement, but focus on your health so you can make it there and enjoy it IF you do.

I'm 67, which now makes me 100% vested in Social Security. I don't plan to retire; I have an office job six miles from my home that allows me to wear jeans and t-shirts, conceal carry, and is so laid back that even though I can go home whenever I want, I stay the entire day.

In five more years I will be required to start drawing my Social Security. I have also set up a retirement plan that should allow me to continue to enjoy the quality of life I have today.

The home I bought a year and a half ago is suitable for me to grow old in, and I don't plan to move again.

All in all, I'd say I'm living my retirement dream right now!

Things like running errands when the stores are less crowded and going fishing on the sunny days are also included. No big world cruises planned.

I know that sounds pretty modest compared to some plans, but it's what I look forward to.

How about you?

I retired May 2016 and I keep myself busy by going to the library and gym 4-5 days a week. On nice days I take day rides on my motorcycle cycle. I'm planning a cross country ride next year to Arizona and hopefully one day a ride to Alaska. I also keep busy with projects around my house, I remodeled my kitchen in 2017 and saved a ton of money completing the project myself.

I'm also involved in several ministries at my church that keep me busy most evenings. My retirement provides a comfortable living for me but I can't go crazy and take any expensive round the world cruises but I'm not interested in round the world cruises so I'm OK. Best advice I can give is don't retire until you're debt free. Zero debt makes retirement a whole lot easier and stress free not having to worry about a house payment or credit card bills.

I want to open up a brewery/restaurant. Not because it would make me a bunch of money, but brewing and cooking are both passions of mine.

I'm 74, still working full time but it's from home. I'm finally considering retiring, though, maybe end of the year maybe in April when I turn 75. Problem has been, what to do! I have hobbies and will get out more around the Southwest but there will be a lot of days to fill and I'm not turning on the TV.

Good Lord willing, planning to go 2.5 more years. That will give me 30 solid, don't plan to wear another Sam Browne for anybody after that. I'll be 57, got lots to do around the place. My wife informed me will be moving not long after that. Who knows where, most likely won't leave Texas.
Plan to travel, fish, and hopefully have a grand kid by then. Looking forward to a lot more than 14 retirement paychecks.

I'll be retired in 137 days. We're staying where we are due to the proximity to kids and grandkids. I envision my days being consumed with tending to unstarted and/or unfinished projects around the homestead, getting my pitiful car collection in better shape, occasional trips to keep the wife happy and more time at the range. If boredom sets in at some point, I'd consider some form of employment but as others have said, no public contact would be a prerequisite for any job I'd consider.

Other than moving to AZ (from MD) and shooting a lot of decent pistol matches, I didn't really plan anything. Matches take at most 2 days/week, avg. about 5/month. Reloading takes only a few days a year. It's all just sort of unfolded. Best purchase was a 30hp Kubota CUT. It is the most useful tool I own, especially as I get older. I had vague ideas of exploring metal work (having been a custom millworker for 25 years, switch from wood to metal). That has happened to a limited extent. I restored a '74 FJ-40 from the ground up over the course of 4 years. I rebuilt every moving part between the lug nuts (drive train, axles including diffs, suspension), substituting some updated features from later FJ's. Then sold it. Bought and sold quite a few pistols, now down to just three, all SIGs (.380ACP, 9mm, and 10mm). I just take it as it comes. Computers are also an avid hobby, having retired from my 2nd 25 year career as a sysadmin. I now only use Mac and other unix variants. Had my fill of Windows supporting a Windows "shop" during that 25 years.

Same for my wife. She has explored several different interests. Our 3 dogs are always there (she's retired K9), but currently she's into rabbits as well. She has discovered my garage and tools, and is building hutches from scratch. I have had to train her (gently) somewhat on which tools to use and not use (for example, we don't cut plywood with a nice Disston hand saw). She still doesn't know half the tools I have nor what they can do. We don't travel (will never fly again), just relax in the nice AZ climate and take it easy. We have six acres in a nice quiet community north of Wickenburg. I get up at 3am to enjoy the beautiful desert nights, sitting on the front porch with my MBP.

I hope I’m still healthy enough to keep up the ranch and run a few more head of cattle. And still do most of it myself.
And shoot more.

We've been retired 3.5 years. We both retired on the same day and haven't really slowed down yet. We summer in Montana and winter in warm climates: 2 in central Mexico and last winter in Destin Fl.

We have plenty to keep us active and can't imagine we both worked for nearly 50 years.
Mike
