I most likely will stay in my current house rather than move south like many do. What appeals to me is having time to space out my projects instead of cramming them into a weekend. Taking some road trips and exploring the state and more of the US. Catch up on reading I've been wanting to do for years, but haven't had time. Things like running errands when the stores are less crowded and going fishing on the sunny days are also included. No big world cruises planned. I know that sounds pretty modest compared to some plans, but it's what I look forward to. How about you?

I would prefer to move to a red state (I'm in a red county in an extremely blue state). However, our current location better lends itself to my wife's hobbies so it will be difficult to move unless she gives up her (existing) hobbies. We won't be wealthy enough to enjoy more than we do today but I think life will be less stressful. As such, I think while we will live more casually and carefree, we'll spend our time by volunteering more. Perhaps get a part time job that is enjoyable (not for financial reasons but for enjoyable time). So, probably a more modest life even compared to you. Travel to gun shows in my own Mercedes Benz Sprinter, reload and cast bullets, go to the range whenever I desire. Cook good foods, listen to music, probably should be doing all this before retirement. Wouldn't mind having a dog as a friend.

My wife and I both work full time and save as much as possible. When we retire we would like to vacation/rent a house/condo on a sandy ocean beach 3 or 4 months per year, basically Nov 1 or Dec 1 - Feb 28 each year. Then live where we live now the rest of the year. We don't want to buy a place and go to the same place every year. Maybe Costa Rica 1 year, Florida panhandle the next year, Mexico the next year, etc... I don't have a desire to own 2 houses and after thinking about it for a long time, I think a 3 or 4 month rental is the best option. I'll probably sit on my ass and swim in the ocean those winter months, then spend my time at our regular house workign on projects..I have a lot of them (2 un-restored muscle cars), build a garage, remodel a few rooms in our house.

I retired in May. We have been building a cabin. My plan was to get my cabin to the point where we could stay in it during deer season. That would be this week, didn't happen. Still getting all our ducks in a row with permits and such. Hope to have all my systems(plumbing, heat, well, electric) in so I can work on it all winter. Longer term I plan on getting the land at the cabin wear I want it to be with food plots and maybe a pond. We do plan on going south but only for 2-3 weeks. I may start another business or work for the guy I sold the company to. Don't know yet. One more thing, I did most of the maintenance on my equipment at the company but some stuff I farmed out. Two weeks after the sale I walked into the other guys shop. He knew that I might sell but he also knew there had been a hiccup. When he saw me he congratulated me on the sale. He could tell just by the look on my face. Apparently I was under more stress that I thought. Life a good Jim

we got married young enough and had kids early enough that we just plan on spending time with each other as a couple. That's the plan, but that's a few decades away. the "how" ideas include a tiny house, a camper/rv, a lot of little road trips here and there, who knows. ____________________________ While you may be able to get away with bottom shelf whiskey, stay the hell away from bottom shelf tequila. - FishOn

I am honestly too young to have given it much thought as retirement is still over 30 years out. What sounds good now is a nice airstream and a good truck and just travel the country to places I have never seen because of work schedules. Just be away from here. But who knows how I'll feel in another 20 years. A Perpetual Disappointment...

your plan sounds pretty good to me. flexible. I retired in August and so far I have not started looking for a replacement job. I have some landscaping projects keeping me busy right now. Definitely more travel and leisure are in the planning.

Assuming I live to retirement age, I plan on getting an RV and traveling some. Since my wife is several years younger, they'll have to be short trips or only a couple a year until she retires. I damn sure ain't working in the 911 business if I do get to retirement. I'll greet people at WalMart first. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Well, I've BEEN retired for 6 years as of last month and so far, my plan is working... Mostly I stay home, putter at my hobbies, keep up with maintenance around the place, do odd jobs for other folks from time to time. Sometimes I have a Plan of the Day, sometimes I wake up with no idea what I'm going to do. The best part is, if the Plan of the Day calls for starting/working on/completing a project, but it's just too darn nice out to waste it working, I can (and do) say "Screw it, I'm going for a ride." The only fly in the ointment is my unheated shop. Boredom does catch up with me when it's too darn cold to do anything in the shop. I keep thinking I should insulate it and get that heater I've been thinking about, but then I think about the enormity of the task of insulating a garage that's been lived in for 20 years and has approximately 2 square inches of un-occupied wall space and I just can't face it. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

For real? |
I can retire in four years, five months, three weeks, seven hours and twenty-two minutes. But who’s counting? I’ll be 48.5 years old. Might be too young to retire. I’m not moving south since my kids are still young and my divorce agreement says I can move one county over. I plan on moving into a red county with six acres minimum so I can set up an outdoor range in my backyard. That’s the plan. Not minority enough!

I’m 45, so I have a ways to go but here are some things I’d hope I’d be able to do. Hobbies like fishing or going to baseball games regularly. Not pro games, local minor league games. Maybe some local hockey games too as it’s my favorite sport. 1 day a week volunteer at the local hospital for a few hours. When I worked there I really appreciated the volunteers and all they did. Some days when you were getting your ass kicked, they made you life so much easier by helping with the little tasks. Learn a foreign language. I’m actually working on this now but it I don’t get to spend enough time on it. Re-organize my garage. I’m fairly organized but the other forces in the house (wife and daughter) seem to always throw a wrench in my organization in the garage. Just last night I was asking the wife why some of her crap was on my work bench. She actually said “I’m surprised you didn’t throw it out”. Sometimes, you gotta roll the hard six

Do---or do not. There is no try. |
This brings to mind the story of Julius Boros, a very successful pro golfer in the late ‘50s through the early ‘70s on the regular Tour before joining the newly-formed Senior Tour. One day after finishing his round in a Senior event, he was talking to a number of writers snd broadcasters when one asked, “So you’re 60 now—-when are you going to retire?” Boros scowled at him and said, “Why should I retire? I ALREADY play golf.” His point was to do what you like doing—-don’t do something just because you now have the time to.
