Nen came to me and said the tractor stopped, come take a look at it, he pay you. I KNEW this rat blasting gig was too good to be true!

Well, I couldn't get it to crank, so I removed the filter. This gray goo oozed out of it. WTF! I cracked the injector line and water came out. goddammit. I go to the obvious spot and there is NO FUEL CAP ON THE TANK!!!!

There is a big plug in the bottom of the fuel tank you can unscrew and drain the tank, so I did that, then pressurized it and blew the lines clear, changed the filters and put fuel in it. Manually pumped the lines free of air with the hand pump on the side of the engine.

Cracked the injectors and gave it a whirl. Nothing. Not even a puff of smoke. Out comes the date kit. Spray some sure fire date action into the intake and it starts, runs a bit and stop. Very little diesel is running out of the lines.

The pump isn't working now. I think the gray goo is all in it.

So, you can't just take this pump off. NOOOOOOOOOO, you have to remove the cowl and bucket to even get to it. Even thin the air conditioner lines have to come off.

What happened to the days of a screwdriver, pair of pliers and a 11/16 fixes a broken tractor?

It took two effing trips at 120 miles a trip to get it apart.

Then only a week for the pump to be completely rebuilt from RUST in the governor.

Nen drops this on my lap today and informs "he pay me" to fix this weekend, the we go rat blasting.

You might need some new friends, with older, easier to service equipment.

I'm getting a grand out of this, but damn it's a task. I just don't want to do it. I no longer work on machines for pay and for good reason.

It hurts.

He trusts NOBODY else. His English is not the best and these trailer trash hicks will take advantage of them. He's my friend and I will do anything for a real friend.

I just wish it was warmer out and the tractor was in the barn. My truck just spun its tires in the muck trying to pull it back from the bucket.

I'm just getting old and cranky.

Make sure to tell him a new fuel cap costs much less than the bill for this..

I agree. I'd put a Racor 500 fuel filter assembly on it. The filter elements are $12 and it's an excellent fuel/water separator with a see through bowl and drain cock on the bottom.

Are you sure the fuel isn't simply gelled over from the cold weather. Diesel will turn thick and gooey with very cold weather to something your describing and won't burn. Usually diesel and water do not mix, diesel always stays diesel and floating above the water but will grow algae in it, the water will always be at the bottom of the tank but the diesel usable floating above it (unless mixed/shaken up).

I deal with water in diesel fuel in yachts often.....and it usually doesn't effect the fuel at all, (it gets filtered out with a Racor or alpha lavel centrifuge).

Wish I knew someone that knew a thing about diesels.
My Ford wouldn't start for me this year. 1st time ever in over 10 years. I don't know a lick about them. From my reading my issue is the injector pump but I have no clue how to test that.
I am presuming it is fairly easy to pull as there is not much to this Old 3600.

They're actually pretty easy to figure out, it's either fuel or air on an old diesel (or lack of compression RARE). Start with the fuel filters, change them and make sure to fill them with fuel. If there is a fuel priming pump, pump it a bunch of times or until firm.....try to start it.....you could always hit it with a little ether or WD 40 in the intake and see if it will fire. If not, next check the fuel lift pump.....and injector pump would be after that. But really they're pretty easy to diagnose. Dirty Fuel filters or air in the fuel system are usually the culprit 90% of the time.

The weather was warm enough to take it apart in short sleeves. The filter and lines were full of water and it sat long enough to damage the pump.

I guess the gray goo was the dust from the air getting down in the tank. I cleaned the tank out and is is absolutely getting new filters.

The filter that I put back on has a drain cock on it and you have to open it to operate the lift pump and when the foam turns to fuel, it is free of air.

Mars,

It sounds like you need a protege... find a young man at the local service station and tell him you will teach him to repair diesel equipment. Then you can supervise and the kid can gain valuable skills that will last a lifetime and provide income.

Oh how I have tried to teach several youngsters the man skills needed to repair things.

All they are concerned about is when the next release of the latest video game is going to be.

But you are right. These skills put me through college and got me through times of unemployment early in my career. I know I have saved tens of thousands of dollars by not needing to send a machine/vehicle to a repair shop.
