All indications point to amateur hour by three junior ex-Special Forces soldiers and rag-tag crew of Venezuelan ex-pats, exiles and criminals; the Fyre Festival of mercenary operations as one commenter said elsewhere. Now, Maduro will use these clowns for his own PR needs. Venezuelan authorities detain U.S. citizens allegedly involved in incursion
All three of these guys were junior SFer's with little experience in larger, strategic mission planning. The head guy who organized all of it, and who's back in the US, his background is as a SF medic 18D, not even a Team Sgt. Now he gets to live with a failed mission and several of his brothers are now in a 3rd world shit hole prison to be exploited and abused. Here’s the career info for the former Green Berets involved in Venezuela raid debacle

Wow, so it doesn't go down like it does in the movies, eh? Hedley Lamarr: Wait, wait, wait. I'm unarmed. Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists. Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

Looking for action and not thinking about "Big Picture"/possible long term consequences. Sad. "I'm not fluent in the language of violence, but I know enough to get around in places where it's spoken."

Why is the US State Dept. trying to help these guys get back home, if they weren't working for the US gov't? I certainly don't expect any country to ever admit to trying to overthrow another gov't. But using official channels to help these guys screams out that the US gov't. was in on it. If the US gov't. had nothing to do with it, the ringleaders are where they belong and will have to wait things out.

Probably because they're American. I REALLY hope this wasn't a CIA botch job. That would be really embarrassing.

“ The Associated Press reported Wednesday that U.S. officials are in the initial stages of a federal investigation into the possibility that Goudreau violated arms trafficking rules. Citing anonymous officials, the AP reported that the investigation stems from the March 23 seizure by Colombian police of a stockpile of weapons being transported in a truck.” All Vice and no Miami. ========================================== Just my 2¢ ____________________________ Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right ♫♫♫

State is likely going through the basic motions of actual intel gathering and basic diplomatic overtures; after all they are US citizens otherwise, they'll get a cursory visit from somebody within State and get told they F'd up, not much we can do. Behind the scenes they're gauging the Venezuelan response and seeing what, if any, demands are being made. The non-US folks will likely disappear, executed, and the gringos will be tortured by their Cuban interrogators to be used for Maduro's PR purposes.

I have been reading a bit about this. the WaPo had a pretty decent account of what their concept was Apparently they were trying to stand up a 300 man force of ex-Venezuelan military soldiers. I spent time thinking about it and I think you 'could' take down Venezuela w/ 300 men. But they would have to be the right men working in concert with a 'legitimate' opposition leader. Extensive training in night operations with satellite comms and light anti-tank capability. Planning and execution would have to be right on the money -- no room for error. 15-20 man strike teams simultaneously taking down key nodes at 0200hrs on D-day. Intel on precisely where Maduro was on the night of the take-down would have to be 110%. Weeks of rehearsals. etc etc Wargame the top 5-8 people / places Maduro would call in an emergency and take them down simultaneously also. huge Psyops / social media effort to rally the opposition masses the next day. These guys were winging it IMO. By their credentials they should have known better but there may be more to the story. ------------------------- Proverbs 27:17 - As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Venezuelan soldiers in balaclavas move a suspect from a helicopter after what Venezuelan authorities described was a 'mercenary incursion', at an unknown location in this still frame obtained from Venezuelan government TV video [Reuters] Note the rifle held by the guy on the right. I wonder if SIG SAUER AG (Switzerland) knows that their guns are protecting Maduro. Nice is overrated "It's every freedom-loving individual's duty to lie to the government." I haven't finished watching the latest season of Jack Ryan yet. Thanks for the spoiler. Everything would have to work flawlessly, just like a Tom Clancy story. What's that phrase about plans and first contact... they fall apart. 300-guys to take down a government, in a country twice the size of California, bring propped-up by Cuban intelligence services...these guys grossly under estimated their enemy. Without Cuban assistance, Venezuela would've failed years ago, in reality, Cuban intel guys were likely tracking them in Colombia where they were doing all their 'training' and mission planning. Hunting down the families of those Venezuelans wanting to participate and finding a starving family willing to rat out an uncle or, cousin for some cheese or, a hunk of meat. At the very least, they could've gotten some shooters who served in 7th Group or, SOUTHCOM who actually have experience working in Latin American
