It may have to do with the components used? I purchased a pair of speakers this year (Focal). At first, the woofer cones were barely moving as music played. One day while playing during the "break-in" period the soundstage collapsed. It was really noticeable. I moved the speakers to where it came back, even better. Now, the woofers move freely, and they sound glorious. Which brings up another point, speaker placement. Move them around, you will find a place where you get the best sound (to your ear). I found even just a few inches affected the sound. Tony

I swear I had something for this |
Break in (especially for higher end speakers) is a thing, but it is also overblown with tons of snake oil and magic elixirs. New speaker components are designed to last decades and the higher you go, the stiffer the materials in the speaker cones and suspensions along with the glues/epoxies/sealants/whatever they use need to stretch out to get the sound the designers intended. It's a bit like an Olympic runner. In order to run faster, they have to stretch first. They can still run fast, but they won't be at their best. It's the same with speakers. It'll react to transients faster and the bass will get better, but we're talking small percentages. What break in will not do to keep with the analogy is turn a slow person into an olympic sprinter. That's where the BS on break in comes in. It won't be a transformative event like Moses parting the Red Sea or a caterpillar entering a cocoon and coming out a butterfly. The core sound of the speaker is the core sound of the speaker. It won't change no matter how long you play it (unless it breaks), but you will get some small changes that will improve some aspects of performance like stretching before you go for a jog.

I’m in the camp of just listen to break in normally That was prior to buying mid/upper level floor standing speakers and a couple woofers Sopra 3’s- I used some Burning Spear reggae on repeat at moderate levels whenever I wasn’t home for a few days /week For REL subs I followed their direction with track 4 from Sneakers ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Live today as if it may be your last and learn today as if you will live forever

Another update. I’ve since removed the SVS 3000 micro (WTS) as I don’t feel it was even needed once I got everything tweaked. These speakers sound so good. The lateral sound stage is incredible, but there’s depth to the stage too. (Keeping in mind, I haven’t had “real” speakers for a number of years.) I think my room and tastes have the space for the larger model, but I’m guessing my “speakers” cash envelope will take a good 5 years to get there. I simply cannot recommend these things enough. YMMV. Find them and listen, if you’re in the market. “The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it.”—H.L. Mencken
