I was talking to the manager of the liquor department of a large grocery chain this morning and he was telling me the breweries are working to phase out bottles by the end of next year. He says shipping costs are the main reason.

Well that’s a bummer. I much prefer beer in bottles over cans.

Speaking of beer. I have had a few golf trips to Scotland, Ireland, and the UK. Seems like we don’t get hangovers from their beer. Some have said it’s due to a lack of preservatives in it. Not one of the twelve of us got a hangover including many late night drinking affairs.

Not at all surprised and IMO cans are better anyway. No light to skunk the beer and to me the beer just seems closer to draft out of a can than a bottle anyway.

There is a craft brewer near me called Sly Fox that never put anything in a bottle, they started on Day 1 to use cans only and actually had several of the bigger players like Sierra Nevada come to them to learn how to do craft beer in cans. Their brewing equipment is all German and the canning line equipment is Italian.

It's funny how the otherwise very same beer tastes better from a bottle than a can.

I assume - if true - this means glass bottles. There is no reason (from their point of view) why it couldn't be put in plastic bottles. I believe this is done at sports venues (sample of one over 20 years ago) to avoid broken glass hazards, although cans would also accomplish this.

I have never seen a plastic bottle of beer. I don't think plastic can do the pressures associated with beer and its carbonation, maybe that's not the case as soda does just fine but there must be a reason.

They do make metal bottles, those are common at sporting events:

I’ve noticed this trend towards cans. I’m seeing far less bottles, and a lot of the craft breweries have never used bottles at all. It sucks, I prefer beer in a bottle. If I buy cans, I always pour into a glass. I understand the reasons why cans may keep the beer more fresh, but it’s so much more satisfying to drink from a bottle.

I much prefer cans over bottles. Much lighter to bring in and discard. I always drink beer from nice glassware.

I'll take, and MUCH prefer a good 'Craft Beer' in a can over a lesser (shitty?) beer in a glass bottle ANY day! Wink

Honestly, thinking about it, I'm pretty sure I haven't purchase ANY bottled beer in the current decade. Further, I've got a decent collection of Heavy Pint and Tulip Glasses, which makes consuming a good Craft Beer all the more satisfying anyway!

This was done in the 1960's then bottles started coming back with twist off caps. Then the twist off caps were eliminated from the better beers. I depise cans.

Prefer bottles to cans myself,

Back in college we just preferred on sale vs container type, mostly cans though.

Found a video from a Beer Cicerone, basically a beer sommelier, not to be confused with John Wicks "sommelier", and they do have a certification process.

Anyway, the summary is that regardless of container, pour your beer into a glass, you'll get better flavor that way.

And todays cans are better than bottles for several reasons, light degradation of the hops in bottled, however, who stores their beer out in the light, and can tech has advanced so your beer doesn't taste like tin.

From "The Everyday Guide to Beer" a Great Courses lecture series:

"Packaging technology over the years has improved greatly, but there is still a risk of flavor instability from air getting into the packaging. The tighter the seal, the better. Pry-off crown corks perform better than twist-off crown corks. Cans let no oxygen in at all, making them the best option for flavor stability and light resistance."

"Additionally, the company [Sierra Nevada] has embraced aluminum cans. Those allow for the packing of 100 cases per pallet [cans] versus 70 cases per pallet [glass]."

"For a full appreciation of the flavor and appearance of beer, it is best to pour beer into a glass."

I am fine with beer in cans, that is usually the way I buy it. Some brewers only put it in bottles and I will buy it that way to get that brand. Cans are just a lot lighter and take up less space and cans be crushed down before recycling.

I used to hate cans but the tech has come a long way since the days of the metallic tasting Foster's oil cans.

The worst thing w/ bottles was the light struck damage over time as they sat on a lit shelf. Brown bottles can only do so much and the green ones were the worst offenders for allowing light in to react w/ hop oils, giving you that green bottled beer skunk aroma that would carry over into the flavor. https://makebeereasy.com/light-struck/

But I'd hate to see bottles gone for good.

To me, beer is MUCH better in a bottle. Cans have a plastic coating inside that affects the taste.
Glass all the way for me; it's not even close.

Re pouring beer into a glass, what's the your preference? Chilled "frosty" glass? Or room temperature (my preference) -- that's room temperature for the glsss, not the beer.

Cellar temp. for ales.
If I'm blessed to be given American lager, I'll take it chilled to the point my taste buds don't know whats going on.

The best beer only comes in cans, usually the 16 oz. variety.
