Now, if your car has to start 30 times a day instead of 7 times a day , are they making the starters on these cars some kind of super human ,high tech, Science break through that extends their life? Are people buying starters every other year? how much gas can a car at Idle burn in the 24 seconds you sit at a light? Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. First time I drove one of those was in Iceland 4-5 years ago. After I figured out what was happening, I wondered the exact same thing. I've replaced too many starters in my life.... Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet. - Dave Barry "Never go through life saying 'I should have'..." - quote from the 9/11 Boatlift Story (thanks, sdy for posting it)

There are a lot of car threads on the forum with complaints about this feature! I think it's due to ever increasing fuel efficiency requirements, NHTSA's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. There are only so many ways you can squeeze a few more miles out of a gallon of gasoline before it gets silly. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

I have a 2014 Mercedes-Benz with the "Eco" mode you refer to. Every time I turn on the car, this is the default mode, but I can turn it off any time I want to (in the heat of the summer, when the engine cuts out at a stop light, so does the A/C compressor). I've not had a problem with the starter, and the restart is almost instantaneous. But I did have to replace the auxiliary battery which powers this feature and several other non-driving functions. My take on it, and this may be specific to Mercedes; I can't speak to other makers, is that there is actually very little wear and tear on the starter. The $245 battery was a little unexpected, but it is what it is... You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless. NRA Benefactor/Patriot Member

Just for the hell of it |
I had this on rentals but never a car I own yet. From my experience, this feature can be turned off. You can also just tap the accelerator, with your other foot on the brake, when stopped at a light. I've done this when it was sunny and hot outside to keep the AC running. Does anyone know if they use a different style starter or have any evidence that this wears the starter faster? _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. One thing I've noticed with this feature is that it's a different stop than when you shut off the key. Basically, the fuel stays pressurized, so it starts almost immediately, no "cranking" like when you start it in the morning. I'm sure it still uses the starter gear/motor, but I don't think it's nearly the stress on it as a traditional start up cycle. I know it's not nearly the drain on the battery as a traditional start up is ( I used a battery monitor on it for my own curiosity). I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

It sucks, a few years ago you would consider a car that shuts down by its self to be broken.

I’m on my third vehicle that that uses that feature. I’ve found on mine it is reliant on brake pedal pressure to a large extent. I haven’t had any starter issues. You can of course turn it off, but after awhile one doesn’t really notice it. I have occasionally seen it denied with auto climate indicator or battery charging indicator.

2015 Volvo XC60, has it. Never an issue. If the temperature is calling for A/C, it won't shut down. Restart is instantaneous and quiet. Relieving pressure on the brake pedal also causes restart. If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there. NRA ENDOWMENT LIFE MEMBER

Not exactly the same, but UPS (the brown truck guys that study every possible thing) figured out via extensive study that shutting down the truck in your driveway and restarting it was a economic winner. Now I hate the feature, but if you drive enough it probably is a net positive. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

Our 2020 Toyota Highlander has it. Annoying until you get used to it but the V-6 gets as good mpg as our 2017 RAV4 4 cylinder did.

Just another feature to go wrong when you need it. All this time I've been thinking that people who are slow leaving the light are on their phones or day-dreaming; maybe they're having to restart their car? flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

My new F150 does it. There is a switch to bypass it for the time the truck is running. Turn off the truck, hit the button again, and so on. Or the engine and ac die at a stoplight. I wedged a wad of paper in between the switch and the dash so I don’t have to keep doing it. I talked to ford and they say that the truck would have to be reprogrammed to keep the truck running- and they won’t do it. I fucking hate it. If I wanna burn dinosaur juice, it’s my dime! Next time get an ETX agm battery from somewhere other than the Mercedes dealer. It will be a "power sports" battery, i.e. quad, motorcycle, snowmobile. If it needs to be coded to the car for replacement, see if there is an independent shop around to scan it to the vehicle. Should be much cheaper in the long run.

Yes, but Ford can't help you because it'll go against their EPA rating. You can thank certain groups from the Government for the forced auto-off. The same group that created rules killing the small diesel engine, and adding DEF to the other diesels. I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

My 2016 F-150 and 2018 Pacifica both have this. I hate it It can be turned off, and I do turn it off It irritates me that it doesn’t stay off. You have to disable it every time you start the car. There is some rational for the feature related to the gas mileage requirements from the epa or some such nonsense. I read up on it once. FWIW, neither of my cars with it have had starter issues yet (knock on wood) —————————————————— If the meek will inherit the earth, what will happen to us tigers?

I got one as a loaner and they didn't tell me. At the first stop light the engine stopped. I was like What the fuck and was in a panic since I just picked it up. I found out it's a feature. For christ sake mention it. ____________________________________________________ The butcher with the sharpest knife has the warmest heart.
