That is a plus. The water supply has some sand in it. The current gate valve will not completely shut off. replacing it with another will eventually result in the same.
Changing to a globe valve will not help in the long run with your sediment issue, and will introduce added pressure drop. A ball valve would be the correct answer, along with a sediment filter.

Not getting sediment into the house. Not seeing anything in the water. Pressure is fine. Over time gate valves are notorious for leaking through. This one is. I am fine with a ball valve. but if there is some sand, even minute amounts is a ball valve going to handle it well? I don't know. A globe by design is really good. I do know that.
