I Am The Walrus |
My 2003 has treated me well but does have 201k miles. Was looking at a used model 2016 or later. Would also consider the Corolla. Also wouldn't be against the Accord or Camry though those are larger vehicles and I'm not sure if I have a need for that or would have a need for that since we have a Highlander as a family vehicle. Not interested in any other suggestions besides what’s above. Now I sit and wait for suggestions not listed above... _____________

I currently drive a 2015 Civic SE, great little car, it does not like the wind, (buffets a bit more than I like) but at 34mpg winter and 36 mpg in the summer, no complaints, I do think Toyota's are quieter, re road noise, at least the Camry vs Accord (several in the extended family), if that mattersThis message has been edited. The Corolla has a timing chain, the Civic has a belt. That's why I buy Toyota instead of Honda. When you compare the Camry to the Corolla, IMHO the Camry might be a better buy because for just a few more dollars you get a bigger car which means more comfort. That might not be a big deal if you are only using it as a work car but take a long trip in the Corolla with another person and you just might wish you had a little more room. I own a Corolla and it's a GREAT car but my next car purchase will be a Camry simply because it's bigger.

i drove a brand new Carolla recently. Nice, plenty of power and good sized. Road noise was moderate I thought. Nice little rig especially for the $ "Practice like you want to play in the game"

If you’re going to get a Civic stay away from the turbo engines. For reliability, I would side with the Corolla. ——————————————— The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Psalm 14:1

Are Turbos really not reliable, still??? Especially from a company like Honda? I was thinking of getting a Subaru Forester XT which has turbo. Hadn't even considered that they might not be reliable. I'm far more worried about the huge iPad dashboard.

The Civic is just flat out more fun to drive. After 11 Toyota’s in our house I would never buy another, particularly after the way corporate treated us regarding a transmission problem in our 3 year old Rav 4. But it is the first stated reason..... toyotas are boring to drive.

I guess its all in what you want. The Civic gets a bit better gas mileage than the Accord. My daughter has a 2018 Accord I bought new. I took it out this morning and ran it through the car wash, vacuumed and did the windows. After I filled it up with gas, I drove to the store and then home. The average showed 41 MPG on the computer. On trips on the interstate, I average around 40 on it. If that's important to you.

Did not know the Accord could do that. I thought it was more along the lines of 33. But the larger car would be more comfortable as I have had 2 Camry's. _____________

It's all in how you drive it. If I drive it like a cop, I'll get 30. If I drive it like I have sense, I can get 40 out of it. Set the cruise on 70-73 on the interstate, the car practically makes its own gas. Set the cruise on 80, it is lower. 85 and you're at 30-32 MPG. If you have a lot of zero to 50 MPH in 2 second tendencies, it suffers. But, the car is more than capable.

Well different strokes... We had a V6 Accord and compared to our current Toyota Avalon (wife's car) I'd put the Avalon well ahead of the Accord in the "fun factor" especially in Sports Mode, not to mention the much more roomy and comfortable interior. I also hated the Accord's cylinder deactivation which could not be turned off. Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. -D.H. Lawrence

I shopped a ninth gen civic si. I liked it and it drive fine. Was a little small but I could have made it work. Wound up with a 9th gen accord sport. Still gets great mileage (real world 34-36mpg hwy) while being a good size for my and my kids. The accord should be almost the same price if not possibly cheaper than the civic because of less demand.

Partial dichotomy |
Thanks for that link. I'd been considering the turbo engine when I eventually trade in my CR-V for a new one. But I am a bit confused that the engine is standard on both the CR-V and the Civic, what I would call two VERY different vehicles. Either the Civic is very well powered or the CR-V is under-powered.

Those cars are not even in the same class. Honda doesn't really make anything that competes with the Avalon. The Accord has always been a more engaging car to drive than the Camry, but the current generation may give it a run for its money.

IIRC all Civics are timing chain now. Not sure if the oil dilution issue is still present on newer 1.5T Hondas, also dont recall it affecting the Accord 1.5T. I've driven a few of the 2.0T Accords & it's a great car, though quite large now. The newer Corollas are pretty nice looking now, especially the hatchback. RE: the same engine in the Civic & CRV, I imagine they both get along quite well. Pretty amazing what these little turbo engines can do. Personally I'm a Honda fan & find them more engaging to drive. For a 3rd option, I agree with the Mazda3 suggestion. Not quite as efficient as the Honda/Toyota offerings, but a blast to drive with the 6MT & 2.5 liter engine. Also, the Honda will have the HondaSensing pkg on a higher trim car from that year range, if that's important to you. The active cruise control is pretty nice. The Enemy's gate is down.
