Did you turn up the volume on your gadget? If not:
Think of the AUX input as headphones- lower the sound on the radio, raise it on the gadget, then raise on radio to a comfortable level. Works in my 1999 Mack ;P

On a Yaris??

Ha, you laugh... I plan to keep it until it turns to dust and, considering it's a Toyota, it'll take another 100 years. Amortized over time, and considering the features an aftermarket radio would afford me, it'll be mere cents per year for all that goodness...

Oh, I know. Smile I feel the same about my 2009 Corolla, despite its current torque converter issue. Pushing 60, it's a question which of us will turn to dust first.

this was my first thought. I’d make sure the volume on your device is almost all the way up.

Note for the record that the car's radio does not turn on when the aux button is pressed. I've connected my iPhone to it and had an app open and playing. Pressing the Aux button on radio when off it remains off. If I turn the radio on and press the aux button nothing changes. That's with device attached and volume up.
