Just the start of the season and several robot call controversy. Redsox/Reds, 6 overturned calls on the ump. Twins/orioles, manager thrown out due to call. I'm worried that this will change the nature of the game. Umps are definitely feeling the pressure, or should be? Good or bad for the game?

On the one hand, I like the human element even though there have been some bad ball/strike calls. But on the other hand, it's about getting it right. I've seen it in operation at Busch stadium and it went pretty smooth. I think it has actually improved ball/strike calls. I think the umps pay closer attention knowing that it could be overturned... and it does go pretty quick, and they put it up on the jumbo-tron for everyone to see at the same time. Bad umps will be exposed. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

With or without, there will always be controversies and players/coaches will continue to be ejected. People against it are up in arms, "The game will be ruined". Nah, the game will be just fine. The original ABS thread is HERE. Q

Twins manager wasn’t thrown out due to the call, he was thrown out because it took so long for the umpire to acknowledge the pitcher’s request for challenging the ump’s call. Minor difference but at the same time, umpire(s) also have a duty to acknowledge the request if requested within the allotted time (3 seconds after pitch) IMHO, the argument should, hopefully, get the umps to pay better attention too Life moves pretty fast. People are screaming that catchers won't be able to "frame pitches" any more. Some people, that's there thing. I ABSOLUTELY HATE a catcher framing pitches. Yes, it's a game of deception, but deceiving the other team. Trying to lie to the officials is something else. To me it's flat out cheating, cheating the other team, cheating the game. If for no other reason, I support the changes (though I still think they're doing it wrong).

It will definitely make umps focus on making correct calls. So far I’m in favor of it.

Not a baseball fan but I did see this in action at some spring training games. If the auto system thingy can overrule the ump, then why not just have the auto system thingy make all the calls and do away with the whole challenge system? “We truly live in a wondrous age of stupid.” - 83v45magna "I think it's important that people understand free speech doesn't mean free from consequences societally or politically or culturally." -Pranjit Kalita, founder and CIO of Birkoa Capital Management

LS1 is correct. Otherwise, it would be.

It is interesting. Tonight's mariner yankee game the yanks challenged at least six and won them all. There were at least three the mariners could of challenged and would of won, but they did not challenge. Seems like all missed calls should be corrected if you are going to do this thing. I dont want robo umps though. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

CB Bucknor had like 20 calls reversed. Him and Angel Hernandez have been dogshit for years. Just consistently terrible. Thankfully Angel finally retired.

With an average pay scale of $300,000 a year I see nothing wrong calling out refs especially those with consistent errors.

What I'd like to see is relegation. Throw all MLB umps in a group with all AAA ups. The worst 5-10% of MLB umps go down, the best AAA ups get promoted. And you do the same between each level. Worst AAA go down, etc. Maybe review 1/3 of umps every three years to identify lont term results and keep some stability, but hey, it's how it works for players. Bad ones get a lot of press these days with sites like Umpire Scorecard, and rightfully so. Good ones, not so much. Pat Hoberg, perhaps the best there is called a perfect game behind the plate during the 2022 world series, 129 for 129. At one point his accuracy rate behind the plate was better than 96% for all calls. If the union didn't interfere, Bucknor and Hernandez would have been gone decades ago. And,if more umps were closer to Hoberg, I'm not sure we'd have ABS.

Those pitches way outside the zone I absolutely agree with you on. On the pitches that are just right on the edge a good framer can make a lot of calls go his teams way. The key to successful framing is minimum glove movement from the point of the catch. Snatching the ball and moving it 8" back into the zone is no good for anyone and will get called either by ABS or the umpire.

Don’t mind the framing of pitches (but also not a fan) because it is up tp the ump to see the ball and make the right call. What I absolutely despise is a rule against the "overshift." If the manager wants all seven players standing in a circle in right field for a right-hand batter, so be it. It’s up to the batter to hit it where they ain’t (as the saying goes) Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. I've never heard it anywhere else, but I can't be the only person to think of it. Someone like Bucknor would be gone soon enough, and it improves accessability at the highest level based on merit.

Man this pitching challenge system is making watching baseball painful. Umps missing calls left and right. People not challenging missed calls and challenging call the ump gets right. This is ruining the game to me. It is a piss poor deal. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I'm not minding it so much. I like that it's not being used all the time but the umps know it could be. Is it possible some of them start to improve? I'd like it to become a happy medium where it can be used but only gets used mostly when the games are close.
