There is no reason to not have an ID, the state will give you one if you tell them you cannot pay for it.

I’ve met people who Were literally born at home who had ID.

Now to the question as to why the stores were demanding an ID, if people present a credit card, the company may require an ID so as to prevent someone using someone else’s credit card.

But most places asking for ID are just info farming...they do it more surreptitiously at some places, they have you fill out something and you later type in your phone number whenever you buy to get a free or coupon after ten tacos etc...

If they ask me for ID at the liquor store or the grocery store because I have alcohol, I just show it to them....it’s not their fault their store forces them to do it..they can obviously see I’m over 21....

But to the hood rats acting out in a store, it’s because they know 9 times out of 10 people will cave in and the rat gets what they want.

Actually, I was asked today to provide a photo ID at a medical appointment. Can understand why. Our local hospital always had a lot of insurance fraud in the ER.

One of the cool things about being in the US as a citizen is not having to prove who you are or that you belong.

Dunno if it is still that way, but in the eighties, one did not have to carry a driver’s license or proof of insurance in the UK. If pulled over or in an accident, one had eight days to take their license and proof of insurance to the police station.

To my knowledge, while you don’t have to have ID, if you are going to drive (at least in CA) you must have with you a valid drivers license and proof of insurance With you. If I’m remembering correctly, it seems that to fly you have to have pilot’s license, medical, and a government issued ID (ie drivers license or ID card) in your possession.

Since I like to drive and fly, I generally have something with me that would suffice as ID.

We have a couple local convenience stores that won't sell you alcohol without SCANNING your ID. They can piss up a rope.

Likewise I've played that game at a local post office. Got to show an ID when paying by credit card. I can buy the same stamps from my home PC or phone without an ID and since they are running my chip card they have zero liability.

Unless you are a cop and are detaining me, I have no legal need to "show you my papers". I detest stupid ass rules for "risk management" purposes and will opt to go where they hire employees smart enough to figure out I'm over 30.

The general discourtesy and narcissism highly present in our society is why I don’t want to do “society” functions anymore. Necessities only. People pull shit like this in line and it makes me furious because they don’t give a fuck about everyone else waiting, only themselves. I wish I could knock them the fuck out. Looking forward to moving out to the country and getting away from the densely populated areas.

Why would ID be required in a retail store if there is no question about age for buying tobacco or alcohol products?

I do not mind providing ID if there is a legitimate reason for it. Otherwise, as Brad said on Page 1, they can pound sand.

Avoiding arrest warrants is the usual reason. Although everyone I know or associate with ALWAYS carries I.D., I see those without I.D. when I am on duty as a Magistrate.

Many miscreants have no identification on them. It takes longer to I.D. them at the jail. And when we finally do, there are always warrants outstanding to serve on them.

And when I am on duty, they are always available to have the warrants served, because they can not post bond till someone shows up with a valid I.D. for them. Smile Regards 18DAI

Damn. And here I am disappointed that I don't get asked for ID when I buy alcohol. I think FL is a "if you look under 40, you get carded" state. I want to be flattered by being asked for ID. Big Grin

I don't get that, either. My Costco card has my photo on it. My membership info is on file with them, including mailing address, phone #, etc.

Both times the patrons were wanting funds from a rewards card program that the stores offer.

They want to know who they are giving the cash too,

So that the primary card owner does not come in two hours later to

My Mom always made me carry ID when I was a kid. Even if it was a handwritten note. Didn't want me to be an unknown if I got hit by a bus. I still carry ID.

My Dad issued me a pocket knife when I was about 10. To this day I carry a knife with me wherever I go. One reason I hate to fly. Female rent a cop at the Kaiser tried to take my knife the other day when I went in to pick up a prescription. I told her no. She stood by and glared at me until I left. About two minutes total. Guess I need to remember to take it off my pocket clip and slip it into my pocket next time.

According to my bank, as I have asked this in the past, here is what they say.

Visa
If the card is signed, the merchant is not allowed to require ID. If the card is unsigned, the merchant must ask that the card be signed and that the customer provides government ID.

MasterCard
If the card is signed, the merchant is not allowed to require ID. If the card is unsigned, the merchant must ask that the card be signed and that the customer provides government ID.

American Express
There is no rule governing the requirement for IDs -- American Express simply wants the merchant to verify that the customer is the actual cardholder.

Discover
Under suspicion that a card is invalid, the merchant can request ID. If the card is unsigned, the merchant must ask for two pieces of ID, one f which must be a government photo ID.

I always have those 3, also. I've never been asked to show ID at a supermarket (I don't buy alcohol or tobacco). Never had to show ID at a convenience store, either (same reason). I pay with a Debit card at most places. I am 82, but most folks think I look more in my late 60s or early 70s.

FWIW, neither of my Debit cards are signed. I don't really understand why it would make a difference, since no one ever asks for a signature any more.

LOL! I'm a retired cop and spent a good part of my time while working as an officer investigating those without ID, that claimed they'd "lost" or "forgotten" it. Usually these people were lying and had good reasons for concealing their true identification because they were wanted for more serious crimes. Imagine my shock yesterday when I went to a medical appointment and discovered that I'd left both my wallets (one with regular ID and the other with my retired officer/CCW permit ID) at home!!! My only excuse (FWIW) is the fact that my medical issues and the current social crisis were more than a little distracting. In any case, just as I'd always carried a "BUG" when I was a LEO, I actually had the forethought to download pics of my CCW and driver's license in my smartphone, something I'd recommend to everyone (even if you're not some old geezer like me). Wink

For purchases of alcohol in my state the clerk/store is required by state statute to verify age by asking for an ID. There's no exception in the statute for people who are obviously over 21 based on appearance. Failure to require identification to verify a person's age is prima facie evidence of a violation.
