The price tag is also reflective of the expected contract order size. R&D gets divided over the number of build units. The B-2 was expected to have 100 units, it was shortened to 21 with the fall of the Soviet Union. The remaining design costs were added to the 21 units increasing the price significantly. If Congress allows a full build out, the price per unit for the B-21 will seem like a bargain compared to the B-2. If they slash the number of aircraft, the price would seem more comparable.  Engines are the same used in the F-35 which is made by Pratt & Whitney The B-52 is using Rolls Royce engines. | |||

Guess I should have expected the long speeches and short aircraft display. What I didn't expect was a "personalized" version of the National Anthem from a government entity but Biden's tentacles reach far. I am so tired of these singers making the Anthem "theirs". I wondered the same thing. The article I read said they were modified F-35 engines. I would assume the afterburner was removed since it's a sub sonic bomber. It seems like a really small engine to power that big of a plane. The article said they chose that engine for cost savings due to parts availability. | |||

Smaller engine, smaller airframe? Or maybe just cost. Either way, thrust. But supersonic speed in a stealth bomber isn’t necessary, you want to be as quiet and invisible as possible. Afterburners have a large IR signature. | |||

Good discussion keeping things in perspective. Unlike the B-2, this new plane isn't completely revolutionary as many internal components are currently in-use which helps reduce supply chain complications. Simply updating the flying-wing design to a more simplified but, modern creation. | |||

I won't use that vulgar language in polite society. I spent 23+ years in the USAF, so I know that a lot of military life revolves around foul language. I just choose to use other words to explain/describe. Our history is festooned with such 'colorful metaphors' - BUFF, SLUF (Short Littel Ugly Fellow - the A-7 Corsair II), FUBAR (Fouled Up Beyond All Recogntion), JANFO (Joint Army/Navy Foul Up), FIGMO (F- It; Got My Orders, meaning you were leaving the current unit for another assignment). . . Watching this now. There were 2 things that really surprised me. 1. USA is the only country in NATO that has bombers. Russia and China are the only other countries that have bombers. 2. Because of the point above, the Pentagon is considering sales to other countries. Currently Australia is very interested. | |||

The countries that actually have a dedicated bomber is surprisingly small. I believe the UK's last bomber was the Vulcan, which was apart of their nuclear deterrence mission however with the shrinkage of their budget and the introduction of the Trident SLBM, the RAF shifted their nuclear mission to tactical delivery. To date, I believe the only nuclear capable aircraft in Europe is the F-16 and any remaining strike variant Tornado's; the F-35 is not yet certified. Australia has been getting serious about their defense and re-introducing the strategic bomber mission to the RAAF could take some of the deterrence strain off of US. I can see the UK possibly kicking tires on the B-21. Way back in the 80's, the F-117 was made available but they refused it. I believe budget, and the political and practical gymnastics to keep such a program hidden was the biggest challenge for them. Curiously the Aussies are the only country to purchase and incorporate an airborne electronic attack aircraft, the EF-18G Growler into their inventory. You know a country is serious when they actually dedicate funds to electronic warfare. | |||

I'll let others comment who have better knowledge but, my understanding is that the entire process to certify is unbelievably detailed, to the point of nearly designing a new airplane. | |||
