Granted calling 911 is typically wise. However the missing information is how quickly did the incident develop? The OP does not state how many times over what time period the 'brother' was asked to leave. If this transpired in minutes, the two individuals were in close proximity, and one was being aggressive, pausing/looking away to dial 911 may not have been prudent. Consider this scenario where the brother appears and how fast this exchange would happen. "Hey understand why you came, but I'd really prefer that you not be here, could you leave?" <Brother advances into house>"Fuck you I'm here to help her" <guy backs up> "Understand but this is my house you need to leave" <Brother continues advancing> "Shut up asshole" <Guy retreats further> "Leave now, I'm not kidding" <Brother pulls knife> " You mother fuc..." <BANG><BANG><BANG><BANG><BANG> Where do you dial 911 in that encounter? Uh... If nothing else, 911 should have been called immediately following the shooting. (I'm honestly surprised that I have to spell that out.) He should have immediately called 911 and explained that someone pulled a knife on him in his own home, he was in fear for his life, and he shot them. Let the 911 operator know who the attacker was, what vehicle they left in, etc. Just sitting back and waiting is a terrible plan. Rather than getting ahead of it by explaining from the get-go that he was the victim and it was a righteous self-defense shoot, he was behind the curve when the other party called first, and likely reported that they were "just minding my own business and my sister's crazy ex-boyfriend pulled a gun and shot me". Just the fact that the shooter waited to call, or never called at all (as in this case), casts even further suspicion on the shooter. E.g. Why didn't he call right away? What was he trying to hide? Was this really a good shoot? What's the rest of the story?

What? <Immediately after the shooting> Dial 9-1-1 "911, what's your emergency?" "A man just tried to kill me, I was in fear for my life and defended myself - please send an ambulance and the police to <insert address>" Poor shot placement or FMJs maybe? With a land line or a cell phone. Obviously. (Even cell phones with no cellular service turned on can still call 911.) The vast majority of people today have their own cell phones. Even if you don't, you can beg or borrow a phone, if you must. There are any number of ways to get access to a phone, other than pay phones (which are largely extinct these days). Especially in the middle of a residential area, which is where this incident took place. Think of it this way: If you had just been mugged, or beaten up, or had your car stolen, would you look around for a pay phone to call the police, and not finding any, just shrug and forget about it? No! If you were having a medical emergency and there weren't any pay phones around, would just just shrug, give up, and wait to die? No! You'd use your cell phone. Or borrow someone else's. Or beg a passerby to call 911 for you. Or bang on the neighbors' doors. Or go to the apartment complex office. Or head to the nearest business and use their phone. Or...

How many shootings or stabbings or other bad stuff have you been to where you read the card and it says "Neighbor states that male came to door screaming to call the cops"? I've been to a bunch. The idea that someone couldn't call the cops for whatever reason in 2018 is thin. with some notable exceptions. Hell, for that matter, just about every day we respond to something that was called in by someone else. Most of it is BS, but just the same.

Besides, as stated in the OP, the shooter has saved text messages showing threats from the ex-GF's family. He has text messages, therefore he most likely has a cell phone. In thia day and age, if you don't call 911 after a situation like this and "I couldn't find a pay phone" is your reason, you're either mentally challenged or you're lying about why you didn't call. (Seriously... Pay phone?)

Of course maybe the guy was in a state of shock about what just happened. Who really knows how you’d react to having you’re life threatened and having to shoot someone multiple times? Furthermore, having to shoot someone you know. "Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can't Lose."

This seems plausible. How many police shoot videos have we seen where the cop goes into a full panic attack during and/or after the event? I've seen several, including some where the poor cop can't function at all afterwards. I'm not saying this is what happened, but it's plausible. .

Yeah. This is going to be one man's word against another. Not good. You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless. NRA Benefactor/Patriot Member

Whether he should have called the cops first or not isn't everything. None of us know exactly what we'd do in that situation. I'm sure he was in shock. Fact is that some hot headed idiot pulled a knife on him and the dumb ass got shot for it and honestly rightfully so. I hope it works out for him and knife boy damn sure better learn his lesson.

And even if you're one of the 5% of Americans who don't have your own cell phone (seriously... 5%... look it up), there are any number of other ways to gain access to a phone in an emergency besides hoping to stumble across one of the few remaining pay phones out there, as I described in my earlier post. Personally, I haven't seen a functional pay phone in about the last 10 years (although I haven't exactly been keeping an eye out for them), and haven't used one myself in about 20 years. "Find a pay phone" would be around #63 on my personal list of "Ways to Contact the Police in an Emergency". Way down there, just above lighting a signal fire, or using a mirror to send morse-code flashes to low-flying aircraft. If you don't have a cell phone, you really ought to get one. Even if it's just for emergencies, and you don't plan to use it for anything else. A cell phone is a great tool for any number of situations, from minor things like dead batteries or flat tires to major emergencies like medical crises and defensive shootings. You don't have to go out and drop a grand on the latest whiz-bang high-tech smartphone. You can get cheap "dumb" phones with a handful of prepaid minutes on them for just a few dollars at most gas stations or grocery stores. (I'm not kidding... You can get a phone for like $15.) And even if you don't have any prepaid minutes left on it, or you don't have a current cell service contract on it, you can still dial 911 from any cell phone. Just like dialing 911 for free from any pay phone.
