Wow, what a nice elitist attitude to have. Do you think the same of the cop that gets out and tosses a football with some kids? Shoots a few hoops at the basketball court? Stops and does a little jump rope with girls at the playground?

Here's mine. It took me 5 minutes, in my office using my cellphone. Don't like it? I could give a rats ass. Don't want to work with me? Double rats ass.

I was told just before I retired that my Dept. needed two types of cops:
Hand shakers and hand cuffers.
The lip synch thing is an outgrowth of that philosophy, I guess.

I see no reason that they can't be the same cops. Different actions for different situations.

I think it's fun and good PR. But, there will come a backlash as people start asking about the amount of time and resources being spent producing these videos. It is clear to me that some of them are professionally choreographed and videoed, and that means there was a lot of time spent in rehearsals and preparation. If that was done on the officers' off duty time, it would be hard to find a complaint, but I doubt that is the case.

So my department did the 'battle' as well. It's a PR stunt by the powers that be to be less scary to the public. Personally, I think it's a waste of time and resources but the Chief does what the Supervisors want and they are predominantly Dems/Blue County.

Sometimes they were the same cop, but not often.

Then I guess things have changed quite a bit. I started in 1980 and retired 10 years ago

There are still cops out there who are better suited to grade schools and handing out stickers, but I've found that most of them can do both...mostly because they are more secure in themselves and their ability to do the job required.

I was always very approachable as a street officer and most folks in the hood would greet me without reservation...well, the OG would, the "young bloods" would sometimes need to be "corrected" by the older guys in the set. I don't think they "feared" me, but they knew I would do "whatever" was needed to get the job done

I work in a really active division. We deal with a lot of really bad people daily.

Cops with a stick in their ass do not last long there. They wound up getting transferred to somewhere they can write all the 4-6 MPH over speeding tickets that they want because "ITS THE LAW".

This lip syncing stuff ain't my cup of tea. But, I challenge any of the haters to show me in real dollars proof about "tax payer money" wasted because I like to know about it. Most of these things are produced by the office of pubic relations (see, look at that, HIGHLY UNprofessional for me to make a pun about the public relations people, I should really go write some mattress tag violations and say 10 Hail Mirandas). They have budgets for just this type of frivolous stuff. Some of the budget just didn't get spent on stickers, or key chains this year but on Lip Syncing as a fair trade off. (Yeah, the radios don't work in patrol, but the AV club has a budget. Ooooops, that was unprofessional of me too, calling them the "AV club". I should probably write some parking tickets next. ITS THE LAW). Officers get detailed to silly shit all the time. (Want to talk about a waste of resources and a danger to public safety, that would be funeral escorts. Blowing through a red light because by statue they have the right of way is going to lead to another fatality one of these days.) Cops go to dog and pony shows constantly. On occasion I have to do spots on local TV on public interest stuff about theft, and I think it is a waste of my time and resources. My boss disagrees. He's in charge, and writes the checks. Therefore, I get detailed to it, and I do the best job that I can with it. It costs the "TAXPAYERS" we're seemingly now worried about it absolutely nothing. But, you're a detective, and you can slip out from time to time, and the many of the officers in this video are apparently patrol guys. Yeah, the hour or so they were out (assuming it wasn't done on OT) of the rotation, I am more than willing to be that there was a stick in the ass dude that caught their calls for them. And complained about it the entire way.

Oh, and I watched exactly one of these videos, and it was from LASD. The parody of Bohemian Rhapsody was hilarious with the Wayne's World touch. I guess if you have no sense of humor, you could always go back to watching "End of Watch" and beating off. (I have really did it that time. REALLY UNPROFESSIONAL. I should do a public apology to Michael Pena for that one. You don't know who Michael Pena is? Have you seen any movie in the last 10 years? He's the hispanic dude)

I'm surprised nobody has posted what is probably the original LEO lip sync video:

Or this one from Australia:

Although I'm not really a fan of these, one of our locals made one that addresses some of the explanations you've seen mentioned in this thread, and is a bit more creative than some of the others. Also less dancing. Wink

Although I've only watched about 10 seconds of this stuff, I think these guys in these videos are closer to the cops who visit the grade schools.

Not a cop, no experience in the area. That said, had an interesting conversation with a friend who is an Lt. at the local PD. He said his cops need to be able to handle the armed felon looking to put a hole in them as well as the odd resident who needs help shutting their water off or whatever other silly little thing. It is apparently all part of the job in that town.

Outstanding! The ending bit was brilliant!

No one doubts the stress; anguish, danger that an officer faces everyday; so it's great to see a department not take themselves so serious that they cannot have a bit of fun too.

Yeah, that was superb! I was already laughing pretty hard at Sabotage in the middle, that was pretty great, but the end totally eclipses it. Also loved the disclaimers at the end.
