Doing the same thing. After looking at everything, we will likely get a Highlander Hybrid. AWD, third row, amazing reliability, easy to drive.

Also looked at a Lexus Rx450hL, but a little too pricey.

We've had a Ford Flex for about 5 years.
It's a 2013 FWD SEL (leaded for an SEL, everything but sunroof & AWD).
We're somewhere around 110k miles on it & it's been largely trouble-free. Only had to replace 2 batteries, evap valve & ignition switch.

Newer Flex Limiteds can be had well within your budget, a but of searching can also find the 3.5TT EcoBoost models.

I'm 6'0 & fit fine in the 3rd row, probably not the most comfortable for a long drive for an adult back there, but likely not bad for kids/teenagers.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The reason I was looking at the Tahoe/Expedition type SUV and not the Highlanders and other AWD vehicles so much was that I'm a little leery of towing (even if it's only occasionally) without dedicated 2/4WD transfer case options.

Am I concerning myself over nothing?

The Highlander with the 4 cylinder can tow 1500 pounds. The V6 has a towing capacity of 5000 pounds.

With what you want to tow, the V6 setup will handle it easily.

What are you towing and where and how often?

Sooo, you think Kia has paid off Car and Driver to have all their editors and writers rave about the car, add it to their top ten list, and beat out several other cars in comparison reviews? Ok, gotcha. They must be spending a lot of money paying off all of the other reviewers as well.

He stated a lawn tractor on a trailer occasionally. BUT, how big of one, is he towing it 10 miles through town or across country etc. My idea of a lawn tractor is something that fits in the bed of the pick up truck, so any of the SUV's mentioned would easily tow that. However, some members on this forum think of a lawn tractor that's much much bigger.

Max of 1000lbs in the trailer, which is a single axle 12'x 8' with wooden deck - which is rated at 3500lb capacity.

I don't think the V6 Highlander should have an issue with that. Do, however, check to see if it already has a hitch on it... The 2019 Limited Platinum my fiancee bought does not have the hitch and it was a pretty expensive add-on (they have to cut into the rear bumper cover to install one).

Piggybacking off my above Flex recommendation, The EB Flex, I've seen towing quad JetSki trailers.

Tow capacity of the EB Flex is 4,500lbs.

Thanks for the pointless/useless link. You didn't like my response? You literally state that they are accepting advertising dollars from automakers... That's like saying McDonald's charges you for food, so you aren't going to eat there.

Kia buys ads from a magazine that has survived solely by selling ads for it's entire existence, and that's a reason to discount a long term review of a vehicle? That's plain goofy. It's as goofy as stating they "always talk up new models" which - if you didn't notice - is kind of the whole purpose of the magazine. Not to mention - how do you know who's buying ads from them if you canceled your subscription in the year 2000. Comedy gold right there.

At least on the V6 Highlander you will be perfectly happy. Lots of experience at higher loads than that on the V6 and its certainly safe and competent.

We had a Honda Pilot (V6) and it would tow the capacity you noted around town without issue. It however sucked big time on the highway. I'd imagine the Highlander would be very similar. Both excellent vehicles, but both treat towing as a secondary issue to everything else they offer.
