PC fans are panicking! Apples new silicon RISC architecture is a major sea change from INTEL's old inefficient CISC chips. They got blown away in the Price/Performance arena that PC's used to do well in. INTEL is scrambling to compete and for now can do little more than throw insults and call names......... Correct, I put it there as a reminder of my wife who strongly opposes Apple pricing. Me, I have 2 iPhones, 8yr old MacBook Pro retina, Apple TV and never a problem. And they've been thoroughly cat tested, dropped, banged around, you name it. That Apple moniker reminds me of my wife after she finds out I bought another Apple product Regards, Will G. | |||

So I was all ready to buy either the MacBook Air or Pro 13” tonight, either one with 16 GB RAM and 512GB hard drive. The apple store was too busy and weren’t able to sell me a computer at all tonight, so I went to Best Buy and the only MacBook they had in stock was the Pro with 8GB RAM and a 256GB hard drive. I almost settled for that but knew I would be kicking myself later for not getting either the upgraded RAM or hard drive. If I could have got either one or the other I would have pulled the trigger, especially since it was on sale for $1099 but I knew I would have buyer’s remorse. So I looked to make a purchase online at apple and I wouldn’t be able to get any of the computers I wanted for over 2 weeks. The only thing I could find available was the 13” Pro with 16 GB RAM and 1TB hard drive. They couldn’t sell it to me for pickup immediately because the store was closed but I’ll order it first thing in the morning and pick it up during the day. I’m blowing the budget a bit but I really didn’t feel like waiting and this will allow me to be a little lazier about transferring stuff to external hard drives for longer term storage. And my wife didn’t bust my chops over the extra couple hundred bucks either, so that sealed the deal. So I’ll let everyone know when I finally get the new computer in hand. Sounds like you've found one you want. If something happens with that one you might check with BHPhotoVideo.com. They have quite a few Mac's in stock and if you sign up for their credit card you can get 3 months no interest and they rebate your sales tax. Even if you want to pay cash you can use the card to save the sales tax and just pay it off first payment. B&H is one of the absolute top notch camera supply places and has a great reputation. When you get it check out the free apps Anphetimine (keeps your screen on) and Alfred (Macro's and Searches). There will be some things that I need to get used to but it won't be bad as I spend so much time using my iPad that most things are very familiar. Great to hear you went through the Apple Store. MIL went through BB and they "set it up" for her, including putting their own bookmarks onto Safari! Pretty much any question on how to do something, you can ask Safari/Google. Last night I tried filling opening online forms on a 2011 MacBook Air, and while it is a great machine, the internal architecture is not suited to the latest operating system. It's about time I bought a new machine also! | |||

I will endeavor to do just that. So far I'm not in love with Pages and how it plays with my older .docx files and I will probably just buy Office for my new Mac. Everything else has been pretty seamless thus far though.Transferring the contents of my old hard drive to the new MacBook was a trivial task and I am grateful for that. I will end up grabbing a 2 TB SSD to store the bulk of my stuff on, as well as a BluRay drive so that I can start ripping DVDs soon. Otherwise I have pretty much just been using my new computer instead of my iPad and getting used to the new ecosystem and have been pleased so far. The other interesting side note from all of this is that I am now going to start a new home project and setup a full on legit network. Little by little I will run Cat6a throughout the house, and pick up equipment for a NAS and I think I will also eventually buy a Mac mini to use as a server. This will be a long term project to be completed over at least a year, but my interest in computer stuff and network stuff has been reignited somewhat. Oh and I haven't charged my computer since I brought it home and have used it as much as I would normally use my iPad, and then done all the other stuff with it and I still have 50% battery life after 3 days. I don't like Pages either, nor Numbers for spreadsheets. Before you spend money on MicroSoft Office, download and try the FREE(!) LibreOffice suite. It has done everything I need, has a high degree of compatibility with MS Office documents, and is easy to use. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים | |||

We hear you. I've talked several dedicated PC'ers into their new Mac's. A Pre-Mac folder would be the origination point of their old files. When opened and saved, it was always saved to the Desktop Command + D. The naming convention was checked; no more underscores for spaces, no more suffix. Then into the new Folders. Never shall the old and new files commingle. IMO, you really want to avoid cross-platform applications; let the Mac do what it was supposed to do; TextEdit is a simple WP program, Pages I use for fancier stuff, including basic graphics. A couple of OS's ago I thought Pages and Numbers were 'perfect' and I hated the newer changes "Upgrades", but I'm now on the latest OS, have not the energy to downgrade the OS. | |||

High degree, not 100%. We deployed it where I used to work. It was adequate for many users, others ended-up having to have MS-Office installed. My wife and I use it at home, but our needs are very modest.
Er... whut? Mac OS X is based on Unix. Unix, on the command line, has the same issue with spaces that does MS-Win. So, if you use a command line at all, it's always wise to be in the habit of avoiding spaces in file and directory names. Spaces aren't a show-stopper, but they make command line life more miserable. So I'm surprised a document import function/operation on the Unix-based OS would actually go to the trouble of replacing underscores with spaces. That's just brain-dead, IMO. Also the elimination of file extensions. File extensions are the means by which many, if not most, Unix-based programs determine what they're looking at. Never mind what happens when you, say, send those files elsewhere by means of upload or email attachments. Interesting information. Makes me wonder how well I'm going to get along with Mac OS X...? Trust me, buy a Synology or QNAP instead of using a mini. Synology is the Apple of the NAS world. Easy to setup, robust, and lots of free software. There isn't a single use case where a mini would be superior to a Synology NAS. I have 20 family members who use my PLEX server from the Atlantic coast to Saipan. The server utilization never goes over 20%, even with several users hardware transcoding. All of my Macs, and my one PC, seamlessly backup to it several times a day. My iPhones download all their photos/videos via the iOS app. I am also using it now instead of Dropbox or Google Drive. The Synology backs itself up daily to my cloud backup (iDrive) as well as to an external hard drive. I even had a drive fail, and the server chugged along just fine with a degraded volume until I installed a new drive and rebuilt the volume (SHR, similar to RAID-5). At work, on our DS1621+ with SSD cache, I even run Win 10 on Synology's free VM to run Quickbooks database manager, and it works great. All in all, I couldn't be more pleased with Synology, and I've just brushed the surface of what Synology NASs can do. There's surveillance station, docker containers, NAS clusters, expansion units, bonded LAN ports, NAS failover, etc. Synology = Apple like. Lesser hardware, better support, less customization, easier to use. QNAP = PC like. Better hardware, less support, more customization, more command line work. You might make all this work using a mini or even a PC with FreeNAS, but it won't be as robust, and it will be a lot more work. One caveat: If you are going to run a media server, get a NAS with an Intel Celeron cpu. It has the hardware decoders. The sweet spot for a home user is a DS420+ or DS920+. I like our Synology NAS well enough, but I don't know as I'd go that far.
For anything more than the two camera licenses that come with the NAS: I would recommend against Synology Surveillance Station. I've been running it a couple years, keep getting fooled into thinking they've going to fix their stuff (the mobile app, DS Cam, in particular, is pretty lame), and, like Linus/Lucy/football: They keep disappointing. Their Surveillance Station product "quality" hardly justifies the list price for per-camera licenses. They have until this winter to get it right (I'm not holding my breath), then I'm switching to DW Spectrum.

Agreed, surveillance is something where I’d want a dedicated device, I’d for no other reason than to have surveillance rated drives. Too bad Synology hasn’t figured it out.
