I have an allergy to tomatoes so avoid them like the plague. However a BLPB (PB=peanut butter) is a favorite. And yes on mayo.

When you add cheese , it becomes a BLTCH, just one step away from my favorite, the BLOTCH (bacon, lettuce, onions, tomato, cheese)

Instead of toasting the bread, I grill it like a grilled cheese (can use mayo to grill it or butter both work equally well) except “open face”.

Buttered/mayo’d side down on the skillet, cheese and cooked bacon on top. Once the cheese starts to melt put the veggies on, a squirt of mayo (or not) and close it up.

Crisp outside, but toast tends to tear up the roof of my mouth so no issue this way.

First, congratulations on joining the fellowship of adults.

Second, IMO avocado, not cheese, belongs on a traditional BLT. Cheese is okay, but it gets away from the BLTness and into "club" territory which is fine, even, dare I say, great territory but away from the roots of the situation.

Third, mayo IS optional.

Fourth, iceberg lettuce is for the birds. Use a romaine, red leaf, or butter lettuce next time.

Fifth, a croissant is next level BLTing. Your instincts are good young(ish) Jedi.

Sixth, DO NOT SKIMP on the tomato. Heirloom is good if bought from the store, better is a solid tomato from a farmers market. Best if out of your (or a known someone else's) garden. Fired green is next level up from croissant.

Last, bacon IS the way, microwaved is for use ONLY in emergency, but I DO consider the fact that at this point in your life your never having had a BLT to be an emergency, so good on you.

Enjoy the rest of your life finding the BLT of your dreams.

I personally do like mayo and will tolerate it on a BLT if I forget to ask it be excluded.

For a BLT I will use yellow mustard (French's)

Avocado pretty much ruins anything as far as I am concerned.

I’m not a fan of “plain” avocado, but I will occasionally use some homemade guacamole as a spread.

Absolutely agree on your lettuce choice, red or green leaf first choice, romaine in a pinch.

I am surprised at the people that actually like mayo on a sandwich, probably the same people that would eat sour cream or tartar sauce. Yuck, the only condiments I will have in my fridge is mustard, salsa, tabasco sauce, spicy ketchup and spicy bbq sauce. Smile

My mother would put a small sprinkle of sugar on the tomatoes. Really sets them off. Great sandwich.

If you are ever in Florida, you are welcome to eat at my house anytime. Smile

I didn't want to get into the weeds on mayo in my OP, but since it has been a theme... For reasons I do not know, perhaps childhood trauma, I don't know, but I have a visceral reaction to mayo. Pipe Smoker posted a picture of a tomato sandwich in this thread, that I am sure he enjoys. However, I can not really look at that picture or think about it without starting to feel a bit nauseous. No ill will to those that like it, everyone has a right to decide what they put in their mouth.

Mayo is a subjective subject. I really do think it adds quite a bit to the BLT experience.. something going on with the tomato, bacon, and mayo flavors intermingling.
