In the case of these two mountain bikers, they both would've had plenty of time to draw a firearm and use it for defense.

How so?

So, a little personal here;
Posted this before.
And I'm not a small guy, those paws were huge and sharp!
Was out calling coyotes and this came sneaking in behind me, shot it at about 50 yards.
Yeah, I was surprised a little...

Sounds like these guys were pretty deep in the woods. I understand you can't have a cat that attacks people living in the city park, but this cat was way out in the woods, doing cougar things. Why is it right to kill it? You go into the woods, you take some chances. Cougars are one of them.

Another example of what my mentor was talking about when he taught “if you are going to read AT all, read IT all.”

Thanks.

Mountain Lions are one of the few animals that scare the shit out of me. This picture was taken a few years ago 2 houses down from me. It had just taken down a deer (out of the picture).

the only one Ive seen up close was on in a small yard in Scottsdale. pinnicle golf course.

the customer had a water feature next to the front door and it would come down on a regular basis to get hydrated.

they had a five foot wide concrete bench there as well,

they said when he laid down on it and stretched out, he would hang off one end by a foot.

This is giving me some reason to think a .40 cal on our week-long Yosemite trip may not be such a bad thing. In the many trips to Yosemite back country, my only concern has been bears.

I think I can carry legally in NPS, but not sure what BSA feels about it. Perhaps another good example of what they don't know won't hurt them.

I've bumped into I don't know how many bears and been stalked by both wolves and cats. It ain't a fun experience I can assure you. Bottom line is, my life, your life, and any other human life, is far more important than that of any animal, wild or domestic.

That is a big cat! Would a 6" hunting knife be of any good? I've never stabbed anything live...especially something all muscle and bone trying to kill me ...cats don't eat at Burger King. You know the saying...about bringing a knife to a gun fight. I'm amazed that both cougar attacks reported on this thread, that in both instances the cougars had their jaws around the intended victims head.

My wife loves hiking. This kind of situation is one of my biggest worries and fears. I now have the G20 whenever I'm allowed to carry it. But I worry about my wife if I get attacked first by surprise. This kind of stuff makes otherwise beautiful hikes a little uncomfortable.

I think a bell might have helped them avoid being surprised by the cat. My question is, how are you going to get the cat to wear it?

Stupid question: will loud whistles give cougars pause? Or do they just not care?

Something like this?

Bells are great for hiking in bear country. You do not want to startle them, and usually they will run away (unless you get near a cub and momma) But with big cats, I am not sure if they give a rip about bells. They are stalking you. This is why I carry a G20 in cat country.

isnt there some quote of the Dalai Lama saying something to the effect of, “If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you it would be reasonable to use your gun to shoot him.”? Granted, a cougar’s teeth and claws are not a gun, but they are deadly weapons. Maybe this is a bad attitude, but if *anything* or *anyone* is looking to kill and eat me (or even just kill me), I’m going to do my damnedest to “stop their aggressive actions” first.

I saw mountain lions (what we call them around here) half a dozen times here on the ranch before we moved out here. Haven’t seen them since, but I’ve seen plenty of deer that they have killed, and they killed a bunch of goats before we got the guardian dogs. They are beautiful, regal, and very impressive animals. A couple of times I caught them in a less than ideal spot as I was driving in my old Tacoma and they were busting a move to get across my path to an area of better cover. The other times they were several hundred yards away, watching quietly and intently and when they became aware I was watching back they calmly sauntered off. As long as they stay that far away, they’re just another attraction of the place. If they become a threat, they become a target. YMMV, but I’d suggest going into any area where they are likely to be if one isn’t prepared and willing to use deadly force as needed may not be the best approach.

jhe888 is talking about after the fact where the mountain lion was hunted down and killed for simply "doing cougar things." I'm sure he has no objection to killing the animal if it is in the process of trying to kill you.
