I forgot about several of the previous uses in the 20th century and mostly didn't know about the others before that. Once immunized, a witness can't refuse to answer on the basis of the Fifth. So they can be subpoenaed and their choices include a) refuse to testify (contempt), b) lie (a new offense not covered by the retrospective pardon), or c) tell the truth (highly unlikely for this crowd, highly embarrassing, but still an option.) | |||
