It's a photochop deal. It's spoofing the B-17, as if it were built like one of Rutan's Long EZ 'tail first' planes. . .

Probably. According to wikipedia (yeah, I know...) it's an AWACS bird based on a 707. Although they might also have bought a surplus one from somebody and converted it into a passenger or cargo hauler. Sure does win the ugly prize though.

KZ, I was scrolling from the bottom up, checking for new posts, so I saw the image before I saw your comment.

The first thing I said when the picture came up was Jimmy Durante!

The more I look at this thing the more I love it.

I can't find a single pitot tube on it.

And I would love to see the checkride on it. During the walkaround "So, Leftenant, you see that horizontal stab up there that we probably put on upside down so we had to put strakes on it to make the airflow behave like every other aircraft that has it's stab installed properly? Yes? What are the holes on each side of the stab for?"

Also in the design phase. Hey, the hydraulic pumps always run hot because the engine is completely encased in the fuselage. OK, add a cooling air inlet. One? Bollocks that, one for each engine! Hey, the fuel/oil heat exchanger is running a little....ADD AN INLET! Hey, these giant fuel tanks on the wings are...ADD AN INLET!

Just pure fun, that plane is!

It's so ugly it's cute (and cool to boot!) Cool

I saw him when I was a kid every year around Christmas on Frosty the Snowman. If you remember him from something else, you must be really old. Razz

Skyvans are cool. A local Dropzone operated one for a bunch of years, and it was a blast to jump out of, but the inside sure is loud as hell. Those Garrets sure aren’t helping quiet things down either.

It looks like that particular skyvan is equipped with a weather radar.
