I don’t think you can trespass somebody who’s never trespassed.

The “good news” is that he likes them in their mid to late teens, and only when he has enough contact to groom them. He’s not luring them in from the street.

Most people would be shocked to know how many sex offenders live around them.

A private property owner can communicate to anyone they do not want on their property through legal means. Do this carefully.

Please remember that your granddaughter will ask at least five whys when you alert her. Spend time role playing with your wife, asking her to be like a first grader.

Granddaughter, we want to share neighborhood news. The family next door has changed. There is a new man there. He looks like this. (Show pictures.) We must not speak with him.

Why?

He has done bad things and we must stay away.

If he is bad, why is he allowed to live here?

He has been punished and that punishment is over.

He seems nice. Why can’t we talk to him?

In the past, he was not nice to others many times.

Oh. Did he do something bad?

Yes. He did very bad things. …

Etc. The point is you must role play first, get the best info possible planned out, and give direction. Do not freestyle this. You will disclose info you do not want your granddaughter to share with her crowd.

Then, have another conversation. Focus on how she is to report interactions if any. Teach her to report WHAT she observed and what she felt. Tech her two safe spaces to flee. Your house. Across the street. Etc.

You can do this.

I know we’ve had several discussions on security cameras but can anyone suggest an easy set up that doesn’t require any wiring and would be for exterior use only?

You might want to explain to him in no uncertain terms what would happen to him if he attempts ANY contact with your daughter-in-law or grand daughter.

He did fifteen years before parole this year, which is only a year or two less than average murderers (not manslaughter... MURDER) do before "first release," so that gives some small context for how seriously the parole board took this case.

If you look at the Michigan inmate / parolee information for him, there are a variety of special parole conditions that include "no contact with children unless a responsible adult is present," "no internet," and "no porn (any kind)."

I'd be exceptionally vigilant for the first one, and if it occurs, document and report. I suspect the PO will not have a sense of humor about it.

@Bytes

Fine if that is informing legal consequences that will be taken, such as reporting violation of registration and/or probation.

If it means anything threatening and reasonable fear of bodily harm or death, one steps from protected speech to felony territory.

And we don't communicate felony actions in milk, graham cracker and nap-mat school...

I agree that they are rarely, if ever, cured. Even if they seem to be cured, they can fall off the wagon like an alcoholic.

Hopefully there is a good resolution through HRK's advice. Otherwise, you can meet with him, show him your gun collection, a map of the nearest state or national forest, and a picture of your best friend's backhoe.

PS- Have you looked getting a large guardian breed dog? They are amazing, and they will instinctively guard your grandchildren.

We have a few Ring "Stick Up Battery" cameras around the outside of the house. Easy setup, totally wireless (WiFi). MSRP is $39.95, but we got them on sale for a lot less, from Woot.com

^^^ I have Blink cameras that were also pretty easy to set up. After an initial trial period, you have to get a subscription though.

A Blink subscription is only required if you want to use their cloud storage.

Otherwise you can use a Blink Sync Module to record locally to a memory card without any subscription.

I disagree here. I would knock on his door, introduce myself and share my concerns.

Not to threaten him, not to spout off any macho BS or lay down any type of law or put him on notice, just a clam attempt to discuss your concerns and see where it goes. Maybe he owns it, maybe he punks up about it. Maybe he saves you the trouble and puts up a warning sign himself in his front yard. You've got nothing to lose by talking to him except maybe needing to take a shower when you are done.

For cameras, I have a tapos hub and a few outside cameras, some battery, some solar, that record to the hub. No cloud and I can run them off of my non-internet connected wi-fi router that I use for my automation stuff if I choose to.

This is a great comparison.

They are exactly like alcoholics. They can stopped, but they can't be cured.

Having dealt with sexual offenders professionally, both in custody and on the street, I can confirm what multiple studies have shown...true sexual predators can't be cured

I have also met registered sexual offenders who most wouldn't think qualify to be on the list at all (public urination qualifies for registration), most would easily fit into regular society and not even raise an eyebrow

I have Blink cameras that view the entire perimeter of my house.

Easy to install and last well over a year on AA batteries.

About ten seconds of Google shows he was convicted as a teacher having sex with a 16 year old student. It appears to be six counts, NOT six victims.

Not every sex offense is equal.

If I remember right here in Cali if they are on probation or parole they must keep all outside lights off, no decorations and be in home between 5pm and 5am.

We have one in our condo complex and the board hs no say in this.
Oh and by the way we had one cut his ankle monitor on Friday in my community and is being hunted.
He is probably in Mexico by now.

If one of the conditions is he can’t live near a playground, find a common area in the neighborhood and work with the HOA to build a playground. Otherwise I would move. Seriously.
