I've never been interested in a Tesla. Until now. I'm now considering between 3 options (amounts are out the door estimates): 1. Used Ridgeline Black: $35K 2. New Camry SE AWD: $38K 3. New Tesla Y AWD (not Premium): $48K ($43K for TCO equivalence). I've regretted spending $35K for a car back in 2000 and vowed I would never spend that much again; I would have been more comfortable with $20-25K. I guess this translates to between $40-67K in today's dollars. #1,2 somewhat aligned w/ the vow, #3 above the vow BUT considering I'm pre-paying for gas and maintenance, TCO equivalence allows for about $5K (for my circumstances). So, the Y may be considered in the ballpark. But need to check on insurance premiums. Still not sure about the Y but this thread has me considering it. Planning to buy a car this year. ^^^^^ I don’t know where “the gilded cage” is, but if you don’t have harsh winter weather I think AWD isn’t needed. That was why I selected RWD for my Tesla Model 3, even though I could easily afford AWD. Lower cost and better driving range. Serious about crackers.

Don’t see much harsh weather at home but hoping to make more trips in retirement that will include some snow. OR, ID, Tahoe, and neighboring destinations. ^^^ I wouldn't be without AWD. I don't plan on seeing a lot of snow, but I want to be prepared should I go further north or as nh says, heavy rain is a common occurrence. Very happy so far with the Camry XSE AWD Hybrid. konata, check out grumpy's Toyota Camry thread.

Thanks. Not too excited about being forced to hybrid but if so, better toyota I guess. I’ve only been buying Toyotas for decades now so Camry would be no surprise. SE is mostly sufficient for us; XSE would be nice but the feature delta, to me, is not worth the price delta (at least on paper). Right now, it’s about 75:25 Toyota:Tesla. The primary attraction of Tesla over Camry for me is FSD. Distant second is EV based TCO influence. Cons include fuel for long trips, shorter life span (possible higher cost to reach 25 years), higher premiums, more inconvenient service. Four days will mark the end of two years with an EV (Cadillac LYRIQ). It has been in to the service department once; that was during the first month, to correct a few minor things that should have been taken care of prior to delivery. Other than that, the required service has been exactly zero. I should probably get around to changing the wiper blades and cabin air filter, one of these days. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

I get it - no regular maintenance like ice cars. But if/when maintenance is necessary, it’s back to the dealership which is not entirely convenient for me. A friend is a Tesla fan boy having more than 6 of them over the past 10-15 years. He’s had to bring in his cars on multiple occasions. Not saying it’s intolerable. But it is not surprising and is not as convenient as taking my Toyotas to a non-dealership shop (who has better mechanics and cheaper cost). Not a deal breaker. But not going in eyes shut either. I am quickly going down this path. I had no intention of buying a new car. But the lady behind me two weeks ago decided I was a better option for stopping than using her brakes! I need to do some test driving of a Model 3 while I fight with her insurance, as they told me they will be declaring my car a total loss. My plan is to do a 3 year lease to decide if I can work with the limitations of charging. I believe I can, but by leasing I have 3 years to make a final determination.

I was never a Tesla fan during the initial hype. However, as of late, I am a believer that it can be a good second vehicle in the household. That said, I do think that a Tesla Y will be an addition to our household in the future. I think I am about 8-9 years from retirement. My current plan is to get one to replace the wife's car in the next 3-4 years. It should give us a nice transition into the whole electric car thing. As we get older, I do believe that Tesla FSD will be a saving grace for senior's independence. The ability is probably the first to go in term of mobility. Heck, the more I research it, the more I think in retirement, we may go for both cars being a Tesla model. We can always rent a ICE vehicle for long road trips anyways.

I thought fsd was supplemental to one’s driving ability and attention. It’s not really supposed to be primary or compensatory. Or is that how it’s being positioned now? FSD is NOT a solution for people that shouldn't drive! According to Tesla... "When enabled, your vehicle will drive you almost anywhere with your active supervision, requiring minimal intervention." "Currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous." https://www.tesla.com/fsd ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! You are entirely correct. In my Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual virtually every mention of FSD uses this phrase: ”Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” That said, my dentist has had his Model Y for quite awhile. He told me that he keeps his hands in his lap unless he’s in a tight spot. Then he lightly grasps the wheel in case he needs to take control. Serious about crackers.

I love my 3 and am looking hard at replacing my truck with maybe a Sierra EV. One thing I will say about FSD is it's not perfect from the times I've tried it, and there are times it comes in hot on people's bumpers or does not understand what the road is doing and tries to take you off-road. I am in a weird spot with it. I have too much fun driving the car and don't fully trust FSD. At the same time, I've recommended it to my folks who are aging; my mom doesn't drive even in an emergency and relies on my dad, who may be the one having the problem. I see it as cheap insurance if something happens and they need to get to the hospital, etc.

I've re-assessed this financially many times from various perspectives. Each time, financially for my specific usages and case, the Camry is coming out ahead in TCO scenarios. To be fair, sometimes it's close / indifferent. For example, the 5 year TCO ranges from $5-10K depending on some assumptions in favor of the Camry. I'm indifferent between the two except for the FSD - that's the primary attraction of the Y in my case. I'm not sure $5-10K is worth the FSD, and that's not even considering the subscription cost. BTW, I keep cars for 20 years so a 20 year TCO is more interesting to me but it's harder to assess with data. The scenario that makes the Y a little more compelling is if I assume gas goes to $10/g and basically stays there while also assuming that the Y is fully covered by my solar panels. But then, the FSD is a curiosity.... Decisions, decisions. "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." If you already have solar the Tesla is a no brainer to me. If a person has personally experienced a Tesla and has charging available at home almost all of them say not only will they stick with Tesla but will never go back to an ICE car.

I'd say having the same car in 20 years is unlikely. long term fuel is going to only get more expensive as demand collapse takes it's toll with EV's and batteries getting better, cheaper, and easier to live with. I'm wiling to bet anyone any amount of money that battery tech in 20 years will beat gasoline on energy density. _____________________________________________ Proverbs 3:31 "Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways."
