Apparently that's state specific. Here in Missouri people tend to drive with expired tags and/or temporary tags for years without issue.

My record is a little over 2 years. They weren't really expired, but I wanted to see how long I could go without the sticker before getting noticed. 2 years, driving every single day through multiple counties.
