I believe the plane was taking off, wonder if this might have been a new method of a terror attack. Worst time for an engine strike. Also believe I heard that the ATC recording has someone saying there are limbs on the runway and they are not talking about trees.

The window for being a threat of a crash would seem to be extremely small. Striking a human is unlikely to structurally compromise an airliner to the point of being unable to fly. If somehow it did, the key moment is V1, when there is a commitment to fly but you are still on the ground. Theoretically there is insufficient pavement to stop once you pass V1 (not always true but it is the way airliners are operated), but lifting off happens very soon after V1, and is different for every takeoff. That is, there is no way for a terrorist to figure out where precisely to stand where the aircraft would be faster than V1 but not yet airborne.

The landing gear might be damaged, but even with many wildlife strikes there isn't history of aircraft being damaged and crashing. I personally know of a turboprop and a Gulfstream IV hitting deer during takeoff, and there are news stories of Boeing 737 hitting deer and not crashing.

If not, it is probably giving them ideas.

I have two questions.

1) I understand that a person getting sucked in will destroy the engine and start a fire. But how does a single engine fire cause smoke to start filling the cabin?

2) Reports of 12 people injured, but should have had seatbelts on for takeoff. Are these like ankle injuries from hitting the ground at the bottom of the ramp? Or just nonsense by people looking for a lawsuit?

Headline for the above link:

“WATCH: Wild Video Shows Moment Frontier Plane Fatally Strikes Trespasser on Runway at Denver Airport”

Much better headline.

These are generic answers, not based on any specific information from this incident:

1) The air conditioning system in the aircraft uses clean air prior to combustion from inside the high pressure part of the engine. Air coming in from the front of the engine is sequentially pressurized by numerous stages of compressors. These look like the fan you see at the front of the engine but are smaller diameter and internal. There are valves in this compressor section that let some of the high pressure air out into the air conditioning system (called a PAC, Pneumatic Air Conditioner, and/or called the Air Cycle Machine ACM) where the temperature and pressure are regulated before being sent to the cabin. Each engine has a separate high pressure air (called Bleed Air) system which feeds its own PAC.

Deeper inside the engine after compression, fuel is injected and there is a continuous fire burning. The exhaust blows out the back of the engine to make thrust.

With that in mind, if there is an internal fire in the engine that sends smoke into the compressor section, the clean air will be contaminated and smoke will flow through the PACs and into the cabin. The temperatures inside the compressor section are quite high, so anything combustible which comes into the front of the engine could smoke as it goes through the compressor section, or due to severe damage the burning fuel in the combustion section might flow forward into the compressor section.

2) Injuries from going down the slides are common and expected. Foot, ankle, and leg injuries especially, but people sometimes tumble down/off the slide. Also, people wandering around on the runway, especially in the dark, are at risk of being hit by emergency vehicles. Then there are potential hazards of sharp debris and smoke inhalation. These are factors a Captain has to consider when deciding whether to remain inside or command an evacuation. Under many circumstances, an engine fire is not reason to evacuate. The fuel source can be isolated and the fire department can extinguish it. This crew judged that the fire was a bigger threat and evacuated (unless passengers self-evacuated which does happen sometimes).

Pisses me off when I see the videos of these emergency evacuations and the idiots are grabbing their overhead stored bags. They need to be pulled aside, identified, and fined.

100% true for a turbojet engine.

Assuming this airbus A321 was using LEAP-1A engines with an 11:1 bypass ratio, most of the thrust is coming from the fan and not the turbine (exhaust) exit.

It is written that way intentionally because the format works. I say the format works because if they were getting likes and clicks and advertiser traffic they wouldn’t write it that way. They would write it in the way the got the most advertiser traffic.

I say this as I went to YouTube because I wanted to watch a video I saw that Ben Stoeger put out. The feed was LITTERED with “BREAKING NEWS- SCOTUS rules that before you carry a gun you must do this one thing”. And “can’t find the dot? The weird secret most instructors won’t tell you”. And my favorite “say these four words if a cop tells you to stop recording them - watch until the end for the secret”

Who the fuck believes this garbage, let alone clicks on it? The people that are targeted by the way it is written. If it wasn’t effective and more people stopped falling for the click bait, it would be written in a different format. But, it draws the social promotion education crowd.

Ya know I was simplifying it down to avoid a 300 page dissertation on turbofans and aircraft systems.

Who writes this stuff, the flight didn't kill anyone and the plane didn't kill him, he offed himself either on purpose or accident.

Should say Man dies on runway when he ran his body through a Frontier jet engine. Film at 11....

You have to understand, this is the Daily Mail, just half a step up from the National Enquirer. I’m serious. Most of their articles are pure trash. Even when posting real news stories, their article titles are always trashy clickbait sensationalism.

I’m surprised they haven’t banned me, yet, because I ridicule them all the time in the comments section. They constantly delete my criticizing comments.

The DailyMail is a helluva lot better than the NYT, etc. Lots of positive articles about President Trump, his administration, and achievements.
