Being self employed, I rarely take any days off. But my loving wife has required it several times, opting to take me away for my Birthday. I in turn have returned the favors. _________________________________________________ "Once abolish the God, and the Government becomes the God." --- G.K. Chesterton

Not since 1977. The Navy took away my birthday, shaved my head and sent me to sea. Cheers, Doug in Colorado NRA Endowment Life Member

Me too! Happy Birthday Milliron. And to everyone getting bent out of shape over people taking vacation on their birthdays, get over it. People can use their PAID VACATION days however they want. Who are you to judge?

I worked for a company that did this, it's a nice perk. The catch was, your work better be in-line with the tempo the company was at or, your out-of-step work cadence would be exposed when you were away.

I usually work on my birthday. 1 time I did take a vacation day as my husband requested I do so as he had a surprise for me. He took me to Cirque de soleil. My boss knew but kept it a secret too.

I worked for a company that not only gave you your birthday off paid, if it fell on a Saturday, you could take the Friday prior to it off, or if on a Sunday, the following Monday. Other than that, no, I don't anymore. _________________________________________ Dei. Familia. Patria. Victoria. Don't back up, don't back down.

Wife made a deal with her former boss to get her birthday as a paid day off outside of regular pto. She explained the lost man hours from the entire accounting department going out for birthday lunch was more than if she was given the day off paid. Her boss saw that math added up and said it was a deal.

When I worked for the Hartford Courant in the early 70s your birthday was a paid day off so it's not a "me" thing. Speaking of paid days off, my next job was at one of the big insurance companies there. One of your entitlement paid days off was for "Duty as a Municipal Election Official" with no limit on how often. I had a connection who got me one of those jobs so I was able to double dip several times a year Harshest Dream, Reality

I worked 23 yrs for a small unionized company, for most of the time there guys took the day off (as it was a bargained benny). toward the end the Co. became penny pinching dicks (if bill took his day I should get his 8 hrs ,its my job the rest of the week; by filling in w/ a qualified guy from another section that wasn't busy). the union guys started not telling management it was their birthday they worked, office staff paid them the union agreed amount.(2 1/2 x hrly rate). Some fellas had a sunday premium(1 1/2 hr rate) and it fell on their 6 day week. along with their birthday they were getting a gross ck of about a grand . after the Co. found out they made sure we got the day off. ___________________ "the world doesn't end til yer dead, 'til then there's more beatin's in store, stand it like a man, and give some back" Al Swearengen

Never bothered to. It’s just another day to me. Some people make a big-to-do about birthdays. Good for them, it’s just not my thing. The “lol” thread

If someone taking off for their birthday is that big of a detriment to the company, I think there's bigger problems than someone taking their birthday off. _____________

A day late, and a dollar short |
Never took my birthday off specifically for that reason. When I worked, I had to put in my vacation requests for the next year, as it was granted per seniority. Some years I took the week of my birthday off, just because it is in the middle of August, prime vacation time in northern MI. ____________________________ NRA Life Member, Annual Member GOA, MGO Annual Member

Some people seem to make a big ass deal over their birthday. Some not so much. I fall in the latter. You're not so special. Every living being has a birth day, and eventually a death day. So no, I would never take a day off of work just because some years ago I popped into the world, all bloody and screaming like hell. Milestone birthdays may add some importance to the day, such as 21st, 50th etc. and I'll give a little pass to those. But still, just a day in your life and I'm going to work. Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. -D.H. Lawrence

My wife does, but she gets like 5 weeks of vacation time. I may have left early once when we had dinner plans. Can't recall ever taking the entire day.

I started a job with a different bank in 1983. While going over all the paperwork with the HR lady, she said a benefit they offered was a free day off on your birthday. I got up and started putting on my coat and she asked were I was going. I explained that it was my birthday. She looked at my info and broke out laughing. I didn’t get it that year.
