Is this that common? Two employees here at the office have taken a day of vacation because it's their birthday. One on Tuesday and one on Thursday.

I have never taken my birthday off for the sole reason of it being the date I was born.

Any thoughts? Do any of you do this?

We always gave the day off to employees, kind of a gift from the company, figured most wanted to be off anyway and it ends the in house party cycle...

Wifes office offers it.

I work on my birthday, holidays, and weekends...

Each day, I am born anew.

You may say that this is not an answer. Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn't.

I took time off. I have to plan a year out because we bid leave in October for the next year. Usually we like to go to Hawaii in November, so I always make sure I have the time off if needed. This year we stayed home and I got a lot of things off the honey do list.

I do when I'm not single, but otherwise meh.

Really. Who cares? They have their vacation days to pick, and they picked their BD as one of the days. It's not like they screw their fellow employees with an extra off day.

As I get older (now 61), my birthday becomes less and less important or significant and just another day, so I don't personally do this. But I don't care if other people do it.

Allowed by company policy? Does their absence overly burden you? If yes and no respectively, no problem.

I never have.

It's my regular day off this year.

I know it is becoming more common in this new and better world we live in, but it is ridiculous to me even for milestones like 40th, 50th, 60th, etc. Your place of employment is what allows you to live the lifestyle you’re at so that work comes first.

I’m 64 two days ago. Yeah, I took my birthday off and the following two days! Haven’t had any extended time off for two years. It’s my personal time off and I’ll take it when I want.
Went to the range to run the rifles, great day. The next two days spent towing and fixing my freaking truck!
Get over it dude. You dont’ take time off owed to you that’s your problem.

I usually do but only because my bride happens to have the same birthday as me. It makes her feel special and that is more valuable to me than the vacation/comp hours, so I do it. I tend to do the same for the kids for the same reason.

Outside of that? No, I'd not take it off. Just another day.

I am self-employed, my company observes an annual company holiday, "Founder's Day," that happens to coincide with the founder's birthday, or the closest workday if it falls on a weekend. Yes, some of my customers have made fun of this practice, but that doesn't bother me.

Of course, if there is an emergency (their designation, not mine) I don't shrug off getting involved. This includes pretty much every Saturday and Sunday as well. When you're self-employed, "regular" working hours are 168 per week.

I've occasionally extended a weekend if my birthday lined up, but never in the middle of the week.

Some people celebrate birthdays. Some people have families that like to celebrate birthdays.

I've worked plenty on my birthday, and I've sometimes scheduled a vacation around it.

Why is it an issue if they're using their allotted vacation days to do it?

Nonsense. Some people do, many do not. I occasionally did as the mood struck. Don't recall, for sure, but most likely when my birthday fell on a Friday or Monday, thus using it as an excuse for a long weekend.

I never really made my birthday all that big a deal, either way.

No but most of my past supervisors would say about mid afternoon "Leave for the rest of the day" as a courtesy. Sometimes I would take advantage of the offer and sometimes not depending on what was going on at the time.

Never took off. Once I worked for a company that paid an extra 8 hours pay on a birthday.
